   Work on the 'The Holy Bible in Modern English' began in 1853 by a London businessman named Ferrar Fenton (1832–1920). The complete Bible was first published in 1903, though some individual bible 'books' were published as separate volumes during the preceding 11 years.
   Fenton is well known for a rearranging of the books of the Bible into what the author believed was the correct chronological order. In the Old Testament, this order follows that of the Hebrew Bible. The name of God was translated throughout the Old Testament as "The Ever-Living".
   Fenton is an exciting translation that shows respect and gives clarity in many areas where other translations fall short. This Bible is described as being "translated into English direct from the original Hebrew, Chaldee, and Greek languages."

    Henrik Borgström assisted Fenton with his translation of the Book of Job, which first appeared in 1898. The book of Job was "rendered into the same metre as the original Hebrew, word by word and line by line". His translation of the New Testament is based on the Greek text of Westcott and Hort. The ordering novelty in the New Testament is that it places the Gospel of John and the First Epistle of John at the beginning before the Gospel of Matthew, thus placing the Acts of the Apostles immediately after the Gospel of Luke.

   Notable as well, is Ferrar Fenton's restoration of the Psalms into the musical verse form as close to the original as he could get. The Psalms were, quite literally, songs, complete with instructions for the "choirmaster" as well as descriptions of the proper musical instruments to be used. Today Psalm 48, Psalm 137, and Psalm 23 are still sung in churches, albeit to tunes not the original.

   This bible is named the "Revised Fenton" because it puts things back into chronological order. In many cases, whether in error or not, Ferrar moved some parts of the scriptures down to the footnote section. These re-ordered verses have been returned to their chronological order as they are currently found in the King James Version. There was no alteration of the wording or intended meaning of what was originally intended by Mr. Fenton."

Blog entry: September 17, 2016

   Welcome to the new blog section. Join us in this exciting effort to display the works of Ferrar Fenton! The Holy Bible in Modern English is now fully digitized and can be seen for it's creative and artistic beauty as well as for the spiritual edification that we all need through the daily study of the scriptures.

   This project actually began in 2012 when the conversion of scanned images, using OCR software, revived a very beautiful but tangled digital version of Ferrar Fenton's work. The major part of the editing, including verse alignment, OCR errors and chapter breaks took over one year. Still, as we go there are minor fixes to punctuation and a few odd necessary edits.

   In its very raw form, 'The Holy Bible in Modern English' went online with a free but very undependable web hosting service in 2014, where it has been ever since.
   With thanks to the generosity of others, just recently, the site has been moved to its current home. This hosting service is by far superior to the previous but costs are high so we are maintaining an ad service to help offset the costs.

RF GEN 10:1

History of Noah's Sons.
Now these are the registers of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth; for they had sons born to them after the deluge.

RF GEN 10:2 The sons of Japheth; Gomer, Magog, and Madai, and Ion, and Thubal, and Meshech, and Tiras.
RF GEN 10:3 And the sons of Gomer; Ashkenaz, and Riphath, and Thogarmah.
RF GEN 10:4 And the sons of Javan (Ion) Elishah, and Tharshish, Kittim, and the Dodanim.
RF GEN 10:5 From these they spread themselves over the sea-coasts of the countries of the nations, each with their language amongst the gentile tribes.
RF GEN 10:6 And the sons of Ham; Cush, and Mizraim, and Phut, and Canaan.
RF GEN 10:7 And the sons of Kush; Seba, and Havilah, and Sabthah, and Raamah, and Sabtheka; and the sons of Raamah, Sheba and Dedan.
RF GEN 10:8 To Kush was born Nimrod. Wild beasts began then to infest the earth;
RF GEN 10:9 so he became a powerful hunter in the presence of the LORD; therefore it is said, "Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the LORD."
RF GEN 10:10 And the capitals of his kingdoms were Babel,1 and Ereck and Akad, and Kalinah in the Bush-land2
RF GEN 10:11 From that land Asshur proceeded to Assyria, and built Ninevah, and the town of the plains, and Kalah
RF GEN 10:12 and Resen, between Ninevah and Kalah, which is a large city.
RF GEN 10:13 The Mizraim also produced the Ludim, and Anamim, and Lehabim, and Naphtuhim,
RF GEN 10:14 and Pathrusim, and Kasluhim, from whom sprung the Philistines and the Kaphtorites.
RF GEN 10:15 And to Canaan were born Zidon, his eldest, and Heth;
RF GEN 10:16 and the Jebusite, and the Amorite, and the Girgashite;
RF GEN 10:17 and the Hivite, and the Arkite, and the Sinite,
RF GEN 10:18 and the Arvadite, and the Zemarite, and the Hamathite; and each spread themselves as the tribes of the Canaanites.
RF GEN 10:19 And the boundaries of the Canaanites are from Zidon by the valley of Gerar to Gaza; along the valley of Sodom. and Gomorrah and Adman, and Zeboiim, to Lashar.
1. The Babel mentioned here must not be confused with the Babylon of the Nebuchadnezzar's, which was built long after, as a City probably really by Nebuchadnezzar the First.—F.F.
2. v10 "Shinar" signifies "Bush-land," and I therefore translate it, to remove a geographical error of old standing—F.F
RF GEN 10:20 These were the sons of Ham, in their tribes and languages, in the regions of the heathen.
RF GEN 10:21 And Shem, the elder brother of Japheth, also produced. He was the father of all the sons of Heber.1
RF GEN 10:22 The sons of Shem were Elam, and Ashur, and Arphaxed, and Lot, and Aram.
RF GEN 10:23 And the sons of Aram Uz and Hul, and Gether, and Mash.
RF GEN 10:24 And to Arphaxed was born Shelah, and to Shelah was born Heber;
RF GEN 10:25 and to Heber were born two sons, the name of the first, Peleg;2 because in his days the Continent was split up; and his brother's name was Joktan.3
RF GEN 10:26 And to Joktan were born Almodad and Sheleph and Hazarmaveth, and Jereh
RF GEN 10:27 and Hadoram, and Uzal, and Diklah;
RF GEN 10:28 and Obal, and Abimael, and Sheba;
RF GEN 10:29 and Ophir, and Havilah, and Jobab; all these were sons of Joktan,
RF GEN 10:30 and they populated from Mesha, by the valley of Sephar, a mountain of the East.
RF GEN 10:31 These are the sons of Shem, by their tribes and by their languages in their countries among the heathen.
RF GEN 10:32 The above were the families of the sons of Noah, and their descendants, by tribes. From them they spread themselves amongst the nations on the earth after the Flood.
1. v21. "Heber" in Hebrew signifies a "colonizer" or "colonist" and it is an historical fact that the Semitic nations have been the greatest colonizers of the earth. As Baron von Humboldt says of the Arabian branch, "They are the most mobile race in the world."
2. and 3. v25 "Peleg" means "split" in Hebrew. "Joktan" means in the Hebrew "Lessened," probably referring to the "lessening" of the original continent by the "splitting" away of the American continents. See Prof. C. A. L. Totten's works upon this great geological convulsion. If we take a map of the two Americas, in Mercator's projection, and cut out the Atlantic, the indentations of the Eastern Americas and Western Europe and Africa fit into each other.—F.F.
