RF EXO 1:1 THE SECOND BOOK OF MOSES, COMMONLY CALLED EXODUS. (ALA SHAMOTH.)
The Names of the 12 Patriarchs.
THESE are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Mitzeraim. The Chief Jacob, and his family with him:,
RF EXO 1:2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah;
RF EXO 1:3 Issakar, Zebulon, and Benjamin;
RF EXO 1:4 Dan and Naphtali; Gad and Asher;
RF EXO 1:5 all the persons proceeding from the loins of Jacob, were seventy individuals; Joseph was already in Mitzeraim.
RF EXO 1:6 Now Joseph and all his brothers died, and all their children.
RF EXO 1:7 But the sons of Israel were fruitful and bred and increased, and became very, very powerful and the land was filled with them.
RF EXO 1:8 A foreign Conqueror rules Egypt and fears Israel.
Then a Foreign Conqueror arose over the Mitzeraim who knew nothing of Joseph,
RF EXO 1:9 and said to his nation, "This people, the sons of Israel, are more in number and stronger than to ourselves,
RF EXO 1:10 therefore let us deal skillfully with them, to prevent them increasing, for it is possible they might turn upon us in war and conquer, for they hate us, and may be fighting against us and expel us from the land:"
RF EXO 1:11 They consequently placed labour masters over them to force them to build, and they built fortresses for Pharaoh—Pithom and Ramasses.
RF EXO 1:12 But the more they oppressed them the more they increased; therefore they trembled and feared before the sons of Israel.
RF EXO 1:13 Consequently the Mitzerites endeavored to crush the sons of Israel, so they embittered their lives by cruel labour,
RF EXO 1:14 in the forges, and in the brick-kilns, and in every labour upon the land, by every means possible trying to crush them.
RF EXO 1:15 The king of the Mitzeraim also summoned the midwives of the Hebrews, of whom the name of the chief was Shifra, and the name of her lieutenant Phua,
RF EXO 1:16 and decreed; "When you deliver the Hebrew women examine their children; if it is a son, kill him; but if a daughter, let her live."
RF EXO 1:17 But the midwives feared GOD, and did not do as the king of the Mitzeraim ordered them, but preserved the children alive.
RF EXO 1:18 The king of the Mitzeraim therefore summoned those midwives again and enquired from them, "Why have you not executed the law, but have preserved the children's lives?"
RF EXO 1:19 When the midwives replied to Pharaoh, "Because they are not like Mitzerite women when in labour, but lively, so that before the time the midwives have come to them they are delivered."
RF EXO 1:20 Therefore GOD showed kindness to those midwives. So the people increased and were very strong;
RF EXO 1:21 and seeing that the midwives were God-fearing he imprisoned them.
RF EXO 1:22 Pharaoh then commanded this people, saying, "Every boy that is born throw him into the river, but let the girls live."
