RF JOB 33:1 And perhaps Job will hear my address
And attend to the whole of my speech;
RF JOB 33:2 For now I have opened my mouth
From my palate my tongue will speak out.
RF JOB 33:3 My true heart will reason and speak,
My utterance will gush from my lips.
RF JOB 33:4 I was made by the spirit of God—
The Almighty's breath gave to me life.
RF JOB 33:5 Answer me now, if you can,
And before me now marshal your proofs.
RF JOB 33:6 See! I am before you for God—
Yet I am but formed out of clay
RF JOB 33:7 And my terrors can never affright,
Nor my might be a load upon you!
RF JOB 33:8 In my hearing you certainly spoke.
And the sound of your boasting I heard:
RF JOB 33:9 "I am pure!" "I am without sin!"
"I am clean!" and "No vices are mine!
RF JOB 33:10 Look! he hunts me to find out a fault,
He thinks about me as his foe,
RF JOB 33:11 He fastens my feet in the stocks,
He watches about all my paths!"
RF JOB 33:12 I reply, You are not right in this;
For, as God is superior to Man,
RF JOB 33:13 Why should you contend against Him
When He gives no account of His acts?
RF JOB 33:14 However, to some God does speak,
And to others, does He not reveal1
—————
Note.—Ch. 33. My version of the above removes the contradiction which verse 14 makes to verse 15, as it is rendered by the older translators. Elihu's contention is, that God does speak and reveal facts to men when He sees occasion; not that He never does, as the Authorized Version and others make him say.
Verses 13 and 14 in the Authorized Version read:
13 "Why dost thou strive against Him? For He giveth not account of any of His matters.
"For God speaketh once, yea twice,
14 yet man perceiveth it not."
Revised Version has:
"Why dost thou strive against Him?
13 For He giveth not account of any of His matters.
"For God speaketh once, yea twice,
14 though man regardeth it not"
Renan has:
"God speaks once to man;
Yea, twice! (but man does not listen)."
All these versions are feeble contradictions arising from ignorance of Hebrew diction and idiom of thought. I unravelled the epigram by reflection on its purport, not merely by a Lexicon. My diction is also far more forcible.—F.F.
RF JOB 33:15 By dreams and by visions at night,
When stupor has fallen on men,
In slumbers, when laid on their bed?
RF JOB 33:16 It is then He uncovers men's ears
And instructs them about the unseen,
RF JOB 33:17 To turn men away from their acts
And take away pride from the great;
RF JOB 33:18 To keep back his life from decay
And his soul from the ford of the Pit.
RF JOB 33:19 Or He lays him with pain on his bed.
And anguish contends with his bones,
RF JOB 33:20 And his life, it refuses its food,
And his body, the choicest of meat!
RF JOB 33:21 His flesh is consumed out of sight
And his bones that were hidden stick out;
RF JOB 33:22 While his body is nearly dissolved
And his soul is approaching the dead.
RF JOB 33:23 If an Angel is present with him,
Interceding, as one of the Friends,
RF JOB 33:24 To show to the man what is right,
Then He pities, and says, "Set him free,
I relieve from descent to decay!"
RF JOB 33:25 And his flesh is revived as in youth,
It returns as in childhood's estate;
RF JOB 33:26 Then he prays to his God who was kind
And looks on His face with delight,
And returns to his duties to man.
RF JOB 33:27 Then he sings to men, saying "I sinned,
And did wrong, but He punished me not,
RF JOB 33:28 But brought back from the ford of the Pit,
And revived me to look on the light."
RF JOB 33:29 Be sure that God acts like this,
More often than once with a man,
RF JOB 33:30 To turn back his life from the Pit,
To rejoice in existence in light!
RF JOB 33:31 Job! attentively listen to me;
Be silent! For more I would speak;
RF JOB 33:32 But if you can answer me, say—
For my wish is to justify you.
RF JOB 33:33 If not, why then listen to me,
Be still while I wisely will teach!
