Work on the 'The Holy Bible in Modern English' began in 1853 by a London businessman named Ferrar Fenton (1832–1920). The complete Bible was first published in 1903, though some individual bible 'books' were published as separate volumes during the preceding 11 years.
Fenton is well known for a rearranging of the books of the Bible into what the author believed was the correct chronological order. In the Old Testament, this order follows that of the Hebrew Bible. The name of God was translated throughout the Old Testament as "The Ever-Living".
Fenton is an exciting translation that shows respect and gives clarity in many areas where other translations fall short. This Bible is described as being "translated into English direct from the original Hebrew, Chaldee, and Greek languages."

Henrik Borgström assisted Fenton with his translation of the Book of Job, which first appeared in 1898. The book of Job was "rendered into the same metre as the original Hebrew, word by word and line by line". His translation of the New Testament is based on the Greek text of Westcott and Hort. The ordering novelty in the New Testament is that it places the Gospel of John and the First Epistle of John at the beginning before the Gospel of Matthew, thus placing the Acts of the Apostles immediately after the Gospel of Luke.

Notable as well, is Ferrar Fenton's restoration of the Psalms into the musical verse form as close to the original as he could get. The Psalms were, quite literally, songs, complete with instructions for the "choirmaster" as well as descriptions of the proper musical instruments to be used. Today Psalm 48, Psalm 137, and Psalm 23 are still sung in churches, albeit to tunes not the original.

This bible is named the "Revised Fenton" because it puts things back into chronological order. In many cases, whether in error or not, Ferrar moved some parts of the scriptures down to the footnote section. These re-ordered verses have been returned to their chronological order as they are currently found in the King James Version. There was no alteration of the wording or intended meaning of what was originally intended by Mr. Fenton."

Blog entry: September 17, 2016

Welcome to the new blog section. Join us in this exciting effort to display the works of Ferrar Fenton! The Holy Bible in Modern English is now fully digitized and can be seen for it's creative and artistic beauty as well as for the spiritual edification that we all need through the daily study of the scriptures.

This project actually began in 2012 when the conversion of scanned images, using OCR software, revived a very beautiful but tangled digital version of Ferrar Fenton's work. The major part of the editing, including verse alignment, OCR errors and chapter breaks took over one year. Still, as we go there are minor fixes to punctuation and a few odd necessary edits.

In its very raw form, 'The Holy Bible in Modern English' went online with a free but very undependable web hosting service in 2014, where it has been ever since.
With thanks to the generosity of others, just recently, the site has been moved to its current home. This hosting service is by far superior to the previous but costs are high so we are maintaining an ad service to help offset the costs.

RF JER 28:1

Hananiah of Gibeon Assails Jeremiah.
It happened in the same year at the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah, king of Judah, in the first of the fifth month, Hananiah-ben-Azer, the Preacher who came from Gibeon, addressed me in the House of the EVER-LIVING-, in the sight of the Priests and all the People, exclaiming:

RF JER 28:2 "Thus says the LORD OF HOSTS, the GOD of Israel, proclaim—' I will shatter the yoke of the king of Babel!
RF JER 28:3 At the end of two years' time I will return to this place all the furniture of the House of the EVER-LIVING, which Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babel, took from this place and removed to Babel.
RF JER 28:4 And Jekoniah-ben-Jhoiakim, king of Judah, and all the transports of Judah, who were removed to Babel, I will restore to this place,' says the EVER-LIVING, for I will shatter the yoke of the king of Babel! '"
RF JER 28:5 But Jeremiah the Preacher replied to Hananiah the Preacher, in the sight of the Priests, and in the presence of the people standing in the House of the EVER-LIVING,—
RF JER 28:6 and Jeremiah the Preacher said, "Amen! May the EVER-LIVING do so. And may the EVER-LIVING confirm the things you have proclaimed, and return the furniture of the House of the EVER-LIVING, and all the transports, from Babel to this place!
RF JER 28:7 However, hear now this message which I speak in your hearing, and in the hearing of all the people.
RF JER 28:8 The Preachers who were before me, and before you from of old, preached to many lands, and great kingdoms, of war, and famine, and plague!
RF JER 28:9 The Preacher who preached about prosperity,—when the promise of the Preacher came, it was known that in truth the EVER-LIVING had sent him
RF JER 28:10 "Then the Preacher Hananiah took the fetter off the neck of the Preacher Jeremiah, and broke it.
RF JER 28:11 And Hananiah exclaimed before all the people, "Thus says the EVER-LIVING! I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babel, at the end of two years' time from off the neck of all nations.' " Then Jeremiah the Preacher went away.
RF JER 28:12 But a message from the EVER-LIVING came to Jeremiah after Hananiah, the Preacher, had broken the yoke from the neck of Jeremiah, to say:"
RF JER 28:13 Go and speak to Hananiah, and say, Thus says the EVER-LIVING, you have broken the yokes of wood, but I will make in their place yokes of iron! '
RF JER 28:14 For thus says the LORD OF HOSTS, the GOD of Israel, I will put a yoke of iron upon all these nations in serving Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babel, and they shall serve him. I also give the beasts of the earth to him."
RF JER 28:15 Jeremiah the Preacher accordingly said to Hananiah the Preacher, "Listen now, Hananiah, the EVER-LIVING did not send you, but you have comforted this People with a lie!
RF JER 28:16 Therefore thus says the EVER-LIVING,—I will send you from off the face of the ground;—you shall die this year, for you have taught rebellion against the EVER-LIVING."
RF JER 28:17 And Hananiah did die that year in the seventh month.
