Work on the 'The Holy Bible in Modern English' began in 1853 by a London businessman named Ferrar Fenton (1832–1920). The complete Bible was first published in 1903, though some individual bible 'books' were published as separate volumes during the preceding 11 years.
Fenton is well known for a rearranging of the books of the Bible into what the author believed was the correct chronological order. In the Old Testament, this order follows that of the Hebrew Bible. The name of God was translated throughout the Old Testament as "The Ever-Living".
Fenton is an exciting translation that shows respect and gives clarity in many areas where other translations fall short. This Bible is described as being "translated into English direct from the original Hebrew, Chaldee, and Greek languages."

Henrik Borgström assisted Fenton with his translation of the Book of Job, which first appeared in 1898. The book of Job was "rendered into the same metre as the original Hebrew, word by word and line by line". His translation of the New Testament is based on the Greek text of Westcott and Hort. The ordering novelty in the New Testament is that it places the Gospel of John and the First Epistle of John at the beginning before the Gospel of Matthew, thus placing the Acts of the Apostles immediately after the Gospel of Luke.

Notable as well, is Ferrar Fenton's restoration of the Psalms into the musical verse form as close to the original as he could get. The Psalms were, quite literally, songs, complete with instructions for the "choirmaster" as well as descriptions of the proper musical instruments to be used. Today Psalm 48, Psalm 137, and Psalm 23 are still sung in churches, albeit to tunes not the original.

This bible is named the "Revised Fenton" because it puts things back into chronological order. In many cases, whether in error or not, Ferrar moved some parts of the scriptures down to the footnote section. These re-ordered verses have been returned to their chronological order as they are currently found in the King James Version. There was no alteration of the wording or intended meaning of what was originally intended by Mr. Fenton."

Blog entry: September 17, 2016

Welcome to the new blog section. Join us in this exciting effort to display the works of Ferrar Fenton! The Holy Bible in Modern English is now fully digitized and can be seen for it's creative and artistic beauty as well as for the spiritual edification that we all need through the daily study of the scriptures.

This project actually began in 2012 when the conversion of scanned images, using OCR software, revived a very beautiful but tangled digital version of Ferrar Fenton's work. The major part of the editing, including verse alignment, OCR errors and chapter breaks took over one year. Still, as we go there are minor fixes to punctuation and a few odd necessary edits.

In its very raw form, 'The Holy Bible in Modern English' went online with a free but very undependable web hosting service in 2014, where it has been ever since.
With thanks to the generosity of others, just recently, the site has been moved to its current home. This hosting service is by far superior to the previous but costs are high so we are maintaining an ad service to help offset the costs.

RF JER 3:1

"For instance when a man divorces his wife, and she has gone from him to another husband, she can never return to him.—Has not this country wandered, and often whored foully,—so shall she return to Me?" asks the EVER-LIVING.

RF JER 3:2 "You lifted your eyes to the beards to see if there were not fornicators in your path. You stand for them like Arabs in the desert, and pollute the country by your whoredoms and your vices.
RF JER 3:3 But many refused, and would not grant the request. Yet with the brow of a whorish woman you refused to be ashamed of yourself.,
RF JER 3:4 "Have you not said to Me, You are the Gentle Father of my youth.
RF JER 3:5 Will He be angry for ever? Will He perpetually retain it?'"
RF JER 3:6 A denunciation of Israel's Worship of Vice.
The EVER-LIVING also said to me in the days of Joshiah, "Have you seen what perverted Israel has done, on the top of every high hill, and under every leafy tree, in whoring there
RF JER 3:7 But I ask her, after having done all that, to return to Me, but she would not return, but glances slyly at her sister, Judah!
RF JER 3:8 Then I determined, that as in every respect perverse Israel had committed adultery, I would divorce her, so I divorced her, but sly Judah, her sister, regarded it not, but went and whored like her
RF JER 3:9 And her whoredoms became more than all, and polluted the country, and defiled the rocks and the woods,
RF JER 3:10 but for all that to her sly sister Judah did not return to Me with all her heart, but only in deceit! " said the EVER-LIVING.
RF JER 3:11 The EVER-LIVING also said to me, "Perverse Israel was more honest in soul than sly Judah.—
RF JER 3:12 Go and proclaim these things to the north, and say, Return, perverse Israel,' says the EVER-LIVING, ' I will not darken My face at you. Only return,' says the EVER-LIVING, I will not be angry for ever.
RF JER 3:13 Only recognize your fault, for you have sinned against your EVER-LIVING GOD and splashed your paths with filth under every leafy tree, and have not listened to My voice,' says the EVER-LIVING.
RF JER 3:14 ' Return, you lost children,' says the EVER-LIVING, for I will come to you and collect you, one from a town, and two from a family, and will bring you to Zion,
RF JER 3:15 and give you thoughtful shepherds, and they will tend you with knowledge and skill.
RF JER 3:16 And when it arrives that you increase, and are fruitful in the country in those times,' says the EVER-LIVING, ' they shall no more demand the Ark of the Covenant of the EVER-LIVING, for it shall not come to their heart, and they will not grieve about it, nor be anxious, nor make another.'
RF JER 3:17 In that period they shall call Jerusalem the ' THRONE of the LIFE,' and all the Heathen will trust with her on the Name of the EVER-LIVING at Jerusalem, and will no more go after perversities, to suffer from them."
RF JER 3:18 In those times the House of Judah will march with the House of Israel from the land of the north to the country of Ashur to the estates of their forefathers.
RF JER 3:19 And I will reflect where I can put you with your children! and will give you a beautiful country,—you shall possess splendid armies like the heathen, and I will say, I am your Father, call to Me, and do not desert Me.'
RF JER 3:20 For exactly like a wife deserting to the wicked, so you have deserted Me, House of Israel,"
RF JER 3:21 says the EVER-LIVING. " A sound of weeping will be heard from My lips!—' Pity My children of Israel, for they have lost their way! They have forgotten their EVER-LIVING GOD!
RF JER 3:22 Return, lost children! I will restore you from your wanderings.' "
The Response of God's Returning Children.
"Here we are! we will give ourselves to You, for You are our EVER-LIVING GOD.
RF JER 3:23 The crowd on the Hills is nothing; is nothing to our EVER-LIVING GOD—the Saviour of Israel!
RF JER 3:24 Shame has devoured the work of our fathers from our youth,—their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters.
RF JER 3:25 We were sleeping with our shame; we lay down with our infamies; for we sinned against our EVER-LIVING GOD,—we and our fathers, from our youth to this day,—and have not listened to the voice of our EVER-LIVING GOD."
