Work on the 'The Holy Bible in Modern English' began in 1853 by a London businessman named Ferrar Fenton (1832–1920). The complete Bible was first published in 1903, though some individual bible 'books' were published as separate volumes during the preceding 11 years.
Fenton is well known for a rearranging of the books of the Bible into what the author believed was the correct chronological order. In the Old Testament, this order follows that of the Hebrew Bible. The name of God was translated throughout the Old Testament as "The Ever-Living".
Fenton is an exciting translation that shows respect and gives clarity in many areas where other translations fall short. This Bible is described as being "translated into English direct from the original Hebrew, Chaldee, and Greek languages."

Henrik Borgström assisted Fenton with his translation of the Book of Job, which first appeared in 1898. The book of Job was "rendered into the same metre as the original Hebrew, word by word and line by line". His translation of the New Testament is based on the Greek text of Westcott and Hort. The ordering novelty in the New Testament is that it places the Gospel of John and the First Epistle of John at the beginning before the Gospel of Matthew, thus placing the Acts of the Apostles immediately after the Gospel of Luke.

Notable as well, is Ferrar Fenton's restoration of the Psalms into the musical verse form as close to the original as he could get. The Psalms were, quite literally, songs, complete with instructions for the "choirmaster" as well as descriptions of the proper musical instruments to be used. Today Psalm 48, Psalm 137, and Psalm 23 are still sung in churches, albeit to tunes not the original.

This bible is named the "Revised Fenton" because it puts things back into chronological order. In many cases, whether in error or not, Ferrar moved some parts of the scriptures down to the footnote section. These re-ordered verses have been returned to their chronological order as they are currently found in the King James Version. There was no alteration of the wording or intended meaning of what was originally intended by Mr. Fenton."

Welcome to the new blog section. Join us in this exciting effort to display the works of Ferrar Fenton! The Holy Bible in Modern English is now fully digitized and can be seen for it's creative and artistic beauty as well as for the spiritual edification that we all need through the daily study of the scriptures.

This project actually began in 2012 when the conversion of scanned images, using OCR software, revived a very beautiful but tangled digital version of Ferrar Fenton's work. The major part of the editing, including verse alignment, OCR errors and chapter breaks took over one year. Still, as we go there are minor fixes to punctuation and a few odd necessary edits.

In its very raw form, 'The Holy Bible in Modern English' went online with a free but very undependable web hosting service in 2014, where it has been ever since.
With thanks to the generosity of others, just recently, the site has been moved to its current home. This hosting service is by far superior to the previous but costs are high so we are maintaining an ad service to help offset the costs.

KJVP AMO 7:1

ThusH3541 hath the LordH136 GODH3069 showedH7200 unto me; and, beholdH2009, he formedH3335 grasshoppersH1462 in the beginningH8462 of the shootingH5927 up of the latterH3954 growthH3954; and, loH2009, it was the latterH3954 growthH3954 afterH310 the king?sH4428 mowingsH1488.

KJVP AMO 7:2 And it cameH1961 to pass, that whenH518 they had made an endH3615 of eatingH398 the grassH6212 of the landH776, then I saidH559, O LordH136 GODH3069, forgiveH5545, I beseechH4994 thee: by whomH4310 shall JacobH3290 ariseH6965? for he is smallH6996.

KJVP AMO 7:3 The LORDH3068 repentedH5162 for thisH2063: It shall not be, saithH559 the LORDH3068.

KJVP AMO 7:4 ThusH3541 hath the LordH136 GODH3069 showedH7200 unto me: and, beholdH2009, the LordH136 GODH3069 calledH7121 to contendH7378 by fireH784, and it devouredH398 the greatH7227 deepH8415, and did eatH398 up a partH2506.

KJVP AMO 7:5 Then saidH559 I, O LordH136 GODH3069, ceaseH2308, I beseechH4994 thee: by whomH4310 shall JacobH3290 ariseH6965? for he is smallH6996.

KJVP AMO 7:6 The LORDH3068 repentedH5162 for thisH2063: ThisH1931 also shall not be, saithH559 the LordH136 GODH3069.

KJVP AMO 7:7 ThusH3541 he showedH7200 me: and, beholdH2009, the LordH136 stoodH5324 upon a wallH2346 made by a plumblineH594, with a plumblineH594 in his handH3027.

KJVP AMO 7:8 And the LORDH3068 saidH559 unto me, AmosH5986, whatH4100 seestH7200 thou? And I saidH559, A plumblineH594. Then saidH559 the LordH136, BeholdH2005, I will setH7760 a plumblineH594 in the midstH7130 of my peopleH5971 IsraelH3478: I will not againH3254 passH5674 by them any moreH5750:

KJVP AMO 7:9 And the highH1116 places of IsaacH3446 shall be desolateH8074, and the sanctuariesH4720 of IsraelH3478 shall be laid wasteH2717; and I will riseH6965 againstH5921 the houseH1004 of JeroboamH3379 with the swordH2719.

KJVP AMO 7:10 Then AmaziahH558 the priestH3548 of BethelH1008 sentH7971 to JeroboamH3379 kingH4428 of IsraelH3478, sayingH559, AmosH5986 hath conspiredH7194 againstH5921 thee in the midstH7130 of the houseH1004 of IsraelH3478: the landH776 is not ableH3201 to bearH3557 allH3605 his wordsH1697.

KJVP AMO 7:11 For thusH3541 AmosH5986 saithH559, JeroboamH3379 shall dieH4191 by the swordH2719, and IsraelH3478 shall surely be led away captiveH1540 out of their own landH127.

KJVP AMO 7:12 Also AmaziahH558 saidH559 unto AmosH5986, O thou seerH2374, goH3212, fleeH1272 thee away intoH413 the landH776 of JudahH3063, and thereH8033 eatH398 breadH3899, and prophesyH5012 thereH8033:

KJVP AMO 7:13 But prophesyH5012 not againH3254 any moreH5750 at BethelH1008: for it is the king?sH4428 chapelH4720, and it is the king?sH4467 courtH1004.

KJVP AMO 7:14 Then answeredH6030 AmosH5986, and saidH559 to AmaziahH558, I was noH3808 prophetH5030, neitherH3808 was I a prophet?sH5030 sonH1121; but I was an herdmanH951, and a gathererH1103 of sycamoreH8256 fruit:

KJVP AMO 7:15 And the LORDH3068 tookH3947 me as I followedH310 the flockH6629, and the LORDH3068 saidH559 unto me, GoH3212, prophesyH5012 unto my peopleH5971 IsraelH3478.

KJVP AMO 7:16 NowH6258 therefore hearH8085 thou the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068: Thou sayestH559, ProphesyH5012 not againstH5921 IsraelH3478, and dropH5197 not thy word againstH5921 the houseH1004 of IsaacH3446.

KJVP AMO 7:17 ThereforeH3651 thusH3541 saithH559 the LORDH3068; Thy wifeH802 shall be an harlotH2181 in the cityH5892, and thy sonsH1121 and thy daughtersH1323 shall fallH5307 by the swordH2719, and thy landH127 shall be dividedH2505 by lineH2256; and thou shalt dieH4191 in a pollutedH2931 landH127: and IsraelH3478 shall surely goH3212 into captivityH1540 forth of his landH127.
