   Work on the 'The Holy Bible in Modern English' began in 1853 by a London businessman named Ferrar Fenton (1832–1920). The complete Bible was first published in 1903, though some individual bible 'books' were published as separate volumes during the preceding 11 years.
   Fenton is well known for a rearranging of the books of the Bible into what the author believed was the correct chronological order. In the Old Testament, this order follows that of the Hebrew Bible. The name of God was translated throughout the Old Testament as "The Ever-Living".
   Fenton is an exciting translation that shows respect and gives clarity in many areas where other translations fall short. This Bible is described as being "translated into English direct from the original Hebrew, Chaldee, and Greek languages."

    Henrik Borgström assisted Fenton with his translation of the Book of Job, which first appeared in 1898. The book of Job was "rendered into the same metre as the original Hebrew, word by word and line by line". His translation of the New Testament is based on the Greek text of Westcott and Hort. The ordering novelty in the New Testament is that it places the Gospel of John and the First Epistle of John at the beginning before the Gospel of Matthew, thus placing the Acts of the Apostles immediately after the Gospel of Luke.

   Notable as well, is Ferrar Fenton's restoration of the Psalms into the musical verse form as close to the original as he could get. The Psalms were, quite literally, songs, complete with instructions for the "choirmaster" as well as descriptions of the proper musical instruments to be used. Today Psalm 48, Psalm 137, and Psalm 23 are still sung in churches, albeit to tunes not the original.

   This bible is named the "Revised Fenton" because it puts things back into chronological order. In many cases, whether in error or not, Ferrar moved some parts of the scriptures down to the footnote section. These re-ordered verses have been returned to their chronological order as they are currently found in the King James Version. There was no alteration of the wording or intended meaning of what was originally intended by Mr. Fenton."

Blog entry: September 17, 2016

   Welcome to the new blog section. Join us in this exciting effort to display the works of Ferrar Fenton! The Holy Bible in Modern English is now fully digitized and can be seen for it's creative and artistic beauty as well as for the spiritual edification that we all need through the daily study of the scriptures.

   This project actually began in 2012 when the conversion of scanned images, using OCR software, revived a very beautiful but tangled digital version of Ferrar Fenton's work. The major part of the editing, including verse alignment, OCR errors and chapter breaks took over one year. Still, as we go there are minor fixes to punctuation and a few odd necessary edits.

   In its very raw form, 'The Holy Bible in Modern English' went online with a free but very undependable web hosting service in 2014, where it has been ever since.
   With thanks to the generosity of others, just recently, the site has been moved to its current home. This hosting service is by far superior to the previous but costs are high so we are maintaining an ad service to help offset the costs.

In the seventhH7637 month, in the oneH259 and twentiethH6242 day of the monthH2320, cameH1961 the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068 by the prophetH5030 HaggaiH2292, sayingH559,

KJVP HAG 2:2 SpeakH559 nowH4994 to ZerubbabelH2216 the sonH1121 of ShealtielH7597, governorH6346 of JudahH3063, and to JoshuaH3091 the sonH1121 of JosedechH3087, the highH1419 priestH3548, and to the residueH7611 of the peopleH5971, sayingH559,
KJVP HAG 2:3 WhoH4310 is leftH7604 among you that sawH7200 thisH2088 houseH1004 in her firstH7223 gloryH3519? and howH4100 do ye seeH7200 it nowH6258? is it not in your eyesH5869 in comparisonH3644 of it as nothingH369?
KJVP HAG 2:4 Yet nowH6258 be strongH2388, O ZerubbabelH2216, saithH5002 the LORDH3068; and be strongH2388, O JoshuaH3091, sonH1121 of JosedechH3087, the highH1419 priestH3548; and be strongH2388, allH3605 ye peopleH5971 of the landH776, saithH5002 the LORDH3068, and workH6213: for I am with you, saithH5002 the LORDH3068 of hostsH6635:
KJVP HAG 2:5 According to the wordH1697 that I covenantedH3772 with you when ye cameH3318 out of EgyptH4714, so my spiritH7307 remainethH5975 amongH8432 you: fearH3372 ye not.
KJVP HAG 2:6 For thusH3541 saithH559 the LORDH3068 of hostsH6635; YetH5750 onceH259, it is a littleH4592 while, and I will shakeH7493 the heavensH8064, and the earthH776, and the seaH3220, and the dryH2724 land;
KJVP HAG 2:7 And I will shakeH7493 allH3605 nationsH1471, and the desireH2532 of allH3605 nationsH1471 shall comeH935: and I will fillH4390 thisH2088 houseH1004 with gloryH3519, saithH559 the LORDH3068 of hostsH6635.
KJVP HAG 2:8 The silverH3701 is mine, and the goldH2091 is mine, saithH5002 the LORDH3068 of hostsH6635.
KJVP HAG 2:9 The gloryH3519 of thisH2088 latterH314 houseH1004 shall be greaterH1419 than of the formerH7223, saithH5002 the LORDH3068 of hostsH6635: and in thisH2088 placeH4725 will I giveH5414 peaceH7965, saithH559 the LORDH3068 of hostsH6635.
KJVP HAG 2:10 In the fourH702 and twentiethH6242 day of the ninthH8671 month, in the secondH8147 yearH8141 of DariusH1867, cameH1961 the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068 by HaggaiH2292 the prophetH5030, sayingH559,
KJVP HAG 2:11 ThusH3541 saithH559 the LORDH3068 of hostsH6635; AskH7592 nowH4994 the priestsH3548 concerning the lawH8451, sayingH559,
KJVP HAG 2:12 IfH2005 one bearH5375 holyH6944 fleshH1320 in the skirtH3671 of his garmentH899, and with his skirtH3671 do touchH5060 breadH3899, or pottageH5138, or wineH3196, or oilH8081, or anyH3605 meatH3978, shall it be holyH6942? And the priestsH3548 answeredH6030 and saidH559, NoH3808.
KJVP HAG 2:13 Then saidH559 HaggaiH2292, IfH518 one that is uncleanH2931 by a dead bodyH5315 touchH5060 anyH3605 of theseH428, shall it be uncleanH2930? And the priestsH3548 answeredH6030 and saidH559, It shall be uncleanH2930.
KJVP HAG 2:14 Then answeredH6030 HaggaiH2292, and saidH559, SoH3651 is thisH2088 peopleH5971, and soH3651 is thisH2088 nationH1471 beforeH6440 me, saithH5002 the LORDH3068; and soH3651 is everyH3605 workH4639 of their handsH3027; and that whichH834 they offerH7126 thereH8033 is uncleanH2931.
KJVP HAG 2:15 And nowH4994, I prayH4994 you, considerH7760-H3820 from thisH2088 dayH3117 and upwardH4605, from beforeH2962 a stoneH68 was laidH7760 upon a stoneH68 in the templeH1964 of the LORDH3068:
KJVP HAG 2:16 Since those days were, when one cameH935 to an heapH6194 of twentyH6242 measures, there were but tenH6235: when one cameH935 to the pressfatH3342 for to drawH2834 out fiftyH2572 vessels out of the pressH6333, there were but twentyH6242.
KJVP HAG 2:17 I smoteH5221 you with blastingH7711 and with mildewH3420 and with hailH1259 in allH3605 the laboursH4639 of your handsH3027; yet ye turned not to me, saithH5002 the LORDH3068.
KJVP HAG 2:18 ConsiderH3820 nowH4994 from thisH2088 dayH3117 and upwardH4605, from the fourH702 and twentiethH6242 dayH3117 of the ninthH8671 month, even from the dayH3117 that the foundationH3245 of the LORD'SH3068 templeH1964 was laid, considerH3820 it.
KJVP HAG 2:19 Is the seedH2233 yetH5750 in the barnH4035? yea, as yetH5704 the vineH1612, and the figH8384 tree, and the pomegranateH7416, and the oliveH2132 treeH6086, hath not broughtH5375 forthH5375: from thisH2088 dayH3117 will I blessH1288 you.
KJVP HAG 2:20 And againH8145 the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068 cameH1961 unto HaggaiH2292 in the fourH702 and twentiethH6242 day of the monthH2320, sayingH559,
KJVP HAG 2:21 SpeakH559 to ZerubbabelH2216, governorH6346 of JudahH3063, sayingH559, I will shakeH7493 the heavensH8064 and the earthH776;
KJVP HAG 2:22 And I will overthrowH2015 the throneH3678 of kingdomsH4467, and I will destroyH8045 the strengthH2392 of the kingdomsH4467 of the heathenH1471; and I will overthrowH2015 the chariotsH4818, and those that rideH7392 in them; and the horsesH5483 and their ridersH7392 shall comeH3381 downH3381, everyH376 oneH376 by the swordH2719 of his brotherH251.
KJVP HAG 2:23 In that dayH3117, saithH5002 the LORDH3068 of hostsH6635, will I takeH3947 thee, O ZerubbabelH2216, my servantH5650, the sonH1121 of ShealtielH7597, saithH5002 the LORDH3068, and will makeH7760 thee as a signetH2368: for I have chosenH977 thee, saithH5002 the LORDH3068 of hostsH6635.
