   Work on the 'The Holy Bible in Modern English' began in 1853 by a London businessman named Ferrar Fenton (1832–1920). The complete Bible was first published in 1903, though some individual bible 'books' were published as separate volumes during the preceding 11 years.
   Fenton is well known for a rearranging of the books of the Bible into what the author believed was the correct chronological order. In the Old Testament, this order follows that of the Hebrew Bible. The name of God was translated throughout the Old Testament as "The Ever-Living".
   Fenton is an exciting translation that shows respect and gives clarity in many areas where other translations fall short. This Bible is described as being "translated into English direct from the original Hebrew, Chaldee, and Greek languages."

    Henrik Borgström assisted Fenton with his translation of the Book of Job, which first appeared in 1898. The book of Job was "rendered into the same metre as the original Hebrew, word by word and line by line". His translation of the New Testament is based on the Greek text of Westcott and Hort. The ordering novelty in the New Testament is that it places the Gospel of John and the First Epistle of John at the beginning before the Gospel of Matthew, thus placing the Acts of the Apostles immediately after the Gospel of Luke.

   Notable as well, is Ferrar Fenton's restoration of the Psalms into the musical verse form as close to the original as he could get. The Psalms were, quite literally, songs, complete with instructions for the "choirmaster" as well as descriptions of the proper musical instruments to be used. Today Psalm 48, Psalm 137, and Psalm 23 are still sung in churches, albeit to tunes not the original.

   This bible is named the "Revised Fenton" because it puts things back into chronological order. In many cases, whether in error or not, Ferrar moved some parts of the scriptures down to the footnote section. These re-ordered verses have been returned to their chronological order as they are currently found in the King James Version. There was no alteration of the wording or intended meaning of what was originally intended by Mr. Fenton."

   Welcome to the new blog section. Join us in this exciting effort to display the works of Ferrar Fenton! The Holy Bible in Modern English is now fully digitized and can be seen for it's creative and artistic beauty as well as for the spiritual edification that we all need through the daily study of the scriptures.

   This project actually began in 2012 when the conversion of scanned images, using OCR software, revived a very beautiful but tangled digital version of Ferrar Fenton's work. The major part of the editing, including verse alignment, OCR errors and chapter breaks took over one year. Still, as we go there are minor fixes to punctuation and a few odd necessary edits.

   In its very raw form, 'The Holy Bible in Modern English' went online with a free but very undependable web hosting service in 2014, where it has been ever since.
   With thanks to the generosity of others, just recently, the site has been moved to its current home. This hosting service is by far superior to the previous but costs are high so we are maintaining an ad service to help offset the costs.

MFT MAT 12:1

At that time Jesus walked one sabbath through the cornfields, and as his disciples were hungry they started to pull some ears of corn and eat them.

MFT MAT 12:2 When the Pharisees noticed it, they said to him, "Look at your disciples, they are doing what is not allowed on the sabbath."

MFT MAT 12:3 He replied, "Have you not read what David did when he and his men were hungry,

MFT MAT 12:4 how he went into the house of God, and there they ate the loaves of the Presence which neither he nor his men were allowed to eat, but only the priests?

MFT MAT 12:5 Have you not read in the Law that the priests in the temple are not guilty when they desecrate the sabbath?

MFT MAT 12:6 I tell you, One is here who is greater than the temple.

MFT MAT 12:7 Besides, if you had known what this meant, I care for mercy not for sacrifice, you would not have condemned men who are not guilty.

MFT MAT 12:8 For the Son of man is Lord of the sabbath."

MFT MAT 12:9 Then he moved on from there and went into their synagogue.

MFT MAT 12:10 Now a man with a withered hand was there; so in order to get a charge against him they asked him, "Is it right to heal on the sabbath?"

MFT MAT 12:11 He said to them, "Is there a man of you with one sheep, who will not catch hold of it and lift it out of a pit on the sabbath, if it falls in?

MFT MAT 12:12 And how much more is a man worth than a sheep? Thus it is right to do a kindness on the sabbath."

MFT MAT 12:13 Then he said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He stretched it out, and it was quite restored, as sound as the other.

MFT MAT 12:14 So the Pharisees withdrew and plotted against him, to destroy him;

MFT MAT 12:15 but as Jesus knew of it he retired from the spot. Many followed him, and he healed them all,

MFT MAT 12:16 charging them strictly not to make him known —

MFT MAT 12:17 it was for the fulfilment of what had been said by the prophet Isaiah,

MFT MAT 12:18 Here is my servant whom I have selected, my Beloved in whom my soul delights; I will invest him with my Spirit, and he will proclaim religion to the Gentiles.

MFT MAT 12:19 He will not wrangle or shout, no one will hear his voice in the streets.

MFT MAT 12:20 He will not break the bruised reed, he will not put out the smouldering flax, till he carries religion to victory:

MFT MAT 12:21 and the Gentiles will hope in his name.

MFT MAT 12:22 Then a blind and dumb demoniac was brought to him, and he healed him, so that the dumb man spoke and saw.

MFT MAT 12:23 And all the crowds were amazed; they said, "Can this be the Son of David?"

MFT MAT 12:24 But when the Pharisees heard of it they said, "This fellow only casts out daemons by Beelzebul the prince of daemons."

MFT MAT 12:25 As Jesus knew what they were thinking, he said to them, "Any realm divided against itself comes to ruin, any city or house divided against itself will never stand;

MFT MAT 12:26 and if Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself; how then can his realm stand?

MFT MAT 12:27 Besides, if I cast out daemons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Thus they will be your judges.

MFT MAT 12:28 But if I cast out daemons by the Spirit of God, then the Reign of God has reached you already.

MFT MAT 12:29 Why, how can anyone enter the strong man's house and plunder his goods, unless he first of all binds the strong man? Then he can plunder his house.

MFT MAT 12:30 He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters.

MFT MAT 12:31 I tell you therefore, men will be forgiven any sin and blasphemy, but they will not be forgiven for blaspheming the Spirit.

MFT MAT 12:32 Whoever says a word against the Son of man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the holy Spirit will never be forgiven, neither in this world nor in the world to come.

MFT MAT 12:33 Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree rotten and its fruit rotten; for the tree is known by its fruit.

MFT MAT 12:34 You brood of vipers, how can you speak good when you are evil? For the mouth utters what the heart is full of.

MFT MAT 12:35 The good man brings good out of his good store, and the evil man brings evil out of his store of evil.

MFT MAT 12:36 I tell you, men will have to account on the day of judgment for every light word they utter;

MFT MAT 12:37 for by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned."

MFT MAT 12:38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to him, "Teacher, we would like to have some Sign from you."

MFT MAT 12:39 He replied to them, "It is an evil and disloyal generation that craves a Sign, but no Sign will be given to it except the Sign of the prophet Jonah;

MFT MAT 12:40 for as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the whale, so the Son of man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

MFT MAT 12:41 The men of Ninive will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for when Jonah preached they did repent, and here is One greater than Jonah.

MFT MAT 12:42 The queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to the wisdom of Solomon, and here is One greater than Solomon.

MFT MAT 12:43 When an unclean spirit leaves a man, it roams through dry places in search of refreshment and finds none.

MFT MAT 12:44 Then it says, 'I will go back to the house I left,' and when it comes it finds the house vacant, clean, and all in order.

MFT MAT 12:45 Then it goes off to fetch seven other spirits worse than itself; they go in and dwell there, and the last state of that man is worse than the first. This is how it will be with the present evil generation."

MFT MAT 12:46 He was still speaking to the crowds when his mother and brothers came and stood outside; they wanted to speak to him.

MFT MAT 12:47 — -

MFT MAT 12:48 But he replied to the man who told him this, "Who is my mother? and who are my brothers?"

MFT MAT 12:49 Stretching out his hand towards his disciples he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers!

MFT MAT 12:50 Whoever does the will of my Father in heaven, that is my brother and sister and mother."
