   Work on the 'The Holy Bible in Modern English' began in 1853 by a London businessman named Ferrar Fenton (1832–1920). The complete Bible was first published in 1903, though some individual bible 'books' were published as separate volumes during the preceding 11 years.
   Fenton is well known for a rearranging of the books of the Bible into what the author believed was the correct chronological order. In the Old Testament, this order follows that of the Hebrew Bible. The name of God was translated throughout the Old Testament as "The Ever-Living".
   Fenton is an exciting translation that shows respect and gives clarity in many areas where other translations fall short. This Bible is described as being "translated into English direct from the original Hebrew, Chaldee, and Greek languages."

    Henrik Borgström assisted Fenton with his translation of the Book of Job, which first appeared in 1898. The book of Job was "rendered into the same metre as the original Hebrew, word by word and line by line". His translation of the New Testament is based on the Greek text of Westcott and Hort. The ordering novelty in the New Testament is that it places the Gospel of John and the First Epistle of John at the beginning before the Gospel of Matthew, thus placing the Acts of the Apostles immediately after the Gospel of Luke.

   Notable as well, is Ferrar Fenton's restoration of the Psalms into the musical verse form as close to the original as he could get. The Psalms were, quite literally, songs, complete with instructions for the "choirmaster" as well as descriptions of the proper musical instruments to be used. Today Psalm 48, Psalm 137, and Psalm 23 are still sung in churches, albeit to tunes not the original.

   This bible is named the "Revised Fenton" because it puts things back into chronological order. In many cases, whether in error or not, Ferrar moved some parts of the scriptures down to the footnote section. These re-ordered verses have been returned to their chronological order as they are currently found in the King James Version. There was no alteration of the wording or intended meaning of what was originally intended by Mr. Fenton."

   Welcome to the new blog section. Join us in this exciting effort to display the works of Ferrar Fenton! The Holy Bible in Modern English is now fully digitized and can be seen for it's creative and artistic beauty as well as for the spiritual edification that we all need through the daily study of the scriptures.

   This project actually began in 2012 when the conversion of scanned images, using OCR software, revived a very beautiful but tangled digital version of Ferrar Fenton's work. The major part of the editing, including verse alignment, OCR errors and chapter breaks took over one year. Still, as we go there are minor fixes to punctuation and a few odd necessary edits.

   In its very raw form, 'The Holy Bible in Modern English' went online with a free but very undependable web hosting service in 2014, where it has been ever since.
   With thanks to the generosity of others, just recently, the site has been moved to its current home. This hosting service is by far superior to the previous but costs are high so we are maintaining an ad service to help offset the costs.

KJVP PHP 1:5 For yourG5216 fellowshipG2842 in the gospelG2098 from the firstG4413 dayG2250 untilG891 nowG3568;

KJVP PHP 1:6 Being confidentG3982 of thisG5124 veryG846 thing, that he which hath begunG1728 a goodG18 workG2041 in you will performG2005 it untilG891 the dayG2250 of JesusG2424 ChristG5547:

KJVP PHP 1:7 EvenG2531 as it is meetG1342 for me to thinkG5426 thisG5124 of you allG3956, becauseG1223 I haveG2192 you in my heartG2588; inasmuchG1909-G3745 as bothG5037 in my bondsG1199, and in the defenceG627 and confirmationG951 of the gospelG2098, ye allG3956 are partakersG4791 of my graceG5485.

KJVP PHP 1:8 For GodG2316 is my recordG3144, howG5613 greatlyG1971 I longG1971 afterG1971 you allG3956 in the bowelsG4698 of JesusG2424 ChristG5547.

KJVP PHP 1:9 And thisG5124 I prayG4336, that yourG5216 loveG26 may aboundG4052 yetG2089 moreG3123 and moreG3123 in knowledgeG1922 and in allG3956 judgmentG144;

KJVP PHP 1:10 That ye may approveG1381 things that are excellentG1308; that ye may be sincereG1506 and withoutG677 offenceG677 tillG1519 the dayG2250 of ChristG5547;

KJVP PHP 1:11 Being filledG4137 with the fruitsG2590 of righteousnessG1343, whichG3588 are by JesusG2424 ChristG5547, unto the gloryG1391 and praiseG1868 of GodG2316.

KJVP PHP 1:12 But I would ye should understandG1097, brethrenG80, that the things which happened unto me have fallenG2064 out ratherG3123 unto the furtheranceG4297 of the gospelG2098;

KJVP PHP 1:13 SoG5620 that my bondsG1199 in ChristG5547 are manifestG5318 in allG3650 the palaceG4232, and in allG3956 otherG3062 places;

KJVP PHP 1:14 And manyG4119 of the brethrenG80 in the LordG2962, waxingG3982 confidentG3982 by my bondsG1199, are muchG4056 moreG4056 boldG5111 to speakG2980 the wordG3056 withoutG870 fearG870.

KJVP PHP 1:15 SomeG5100 indeedG3303 preachG2784 ChristG5547 evenG2532 of envyG5355 and strifeG2054; and someG5100 alsoG2532 of goodG2107 willG2107:

KJVP PHP 1:16 The oneG3303 preachG2605 Christ.G5547 of contentionG2052, not sincerelyG55, supposingG3633 to addG2018 afflictionG2347 to my bondsG1199:

KJVP PHP 1:17 But the other of loveG26, knowingG1492 that I am setG2749 for the defenceG627 of the gospelG2098.

KJVP PHP 1:18 WhatG5101 thenG1063? notwithstandingG4133, everyG3956 wayG5158, whetherG1535 in pretenceG4392, orG1535 in truthG226, ChristG5547 is preachedG2605; and I thereinG1722-G5129 do rejoiceG5463, yeaG235, and will rejoiceG5463.

KJVP PHP 1:19 For I knowG1492 that thisG5124 shall turnG576 to my salvationG4991 throughG1223 yourG5216 prayerG1162, and the supplyG2024 of the SpiritG4151 of JesusG2424 ChristG5547,

KJVP PHP 1:20 AccordingG2596 to my earnestG603 expectationG603 and my hopeG1680, that in nothingG3762 I shall be ashamedG153, but that with allG3956 boldnessG3954, as alwaysG3842, so nowG3568 alsoG2532 ChristG5547 shall be magnifiedG3170 in my bodyG4983, whether.G1535 it be by lifeG2222, or.G1535 by deathG2288.

KJVP PHP 1:21 For to me to liveG2198 is ChristG5547, and to dieG599 is gainG2771.

KJVP PHP 1:22 But ifG1487 I liveG2198 in the fleshG4561, thisG5124 is the fruitG2590 of my labourG2041: yetG2532 whatG5101 I shall chooseG138 I wotG1107 not.

KJVP PHP 1:23 For I am in a straitG4912 betwixtG1537 twoG1417, havingG2192 a desireG1939 to departG360, and to be with ChristG5547; which is farG4183-G3123 betterG2909:

KJVP PHP 1:24 NeverthelessG1161 to abideG1961 in the fleshG4561 is moreG316 needfulG316 for you.

KJVP PHP 1:25 And having thisG5124 confidenceG3982, I knowG1492 that I shall abideG3306 and continueG4839 with you allG3956 for yourG5216 furtheranceG4297 and joyG5479 of faithG4102;

KJVP PHP 1:26 That yourG5216 rejoicingG2745 may be more abundantG4052 in JesusG2424 ChristG5547 for me by my comingG3952 to you againG3825.

KJVP PHP 1:27 OnlyG3440 let your conversationG4176 be as it becomethG516 the gospelG2098 of ChristG5547: that whetherG1535 I comeG2064 and seeG1492 you, orG1535 else be absentG548, I may hearG191 of yourG5216 affairsG4012, that ye standG4739 fast in oneG1520 spiritG4151, with oneG3391 mindG5590 strivingG4866 togetherG4866 for the faithG4102 of the gospelG2098;

KJVP PHP 1:28 And in nothingG3367 terrifiedG4426 by yourG3588 adversariesG480: whichG3748 is to them an evidentG1732 tokenG1732 of perditionG684, but to you of salvationG4991, and that of GodG2316.

KJVP PHP 1:29 For unto you it is givenG5483 in the behalfG5228 of ChristG5547, not onlyG3440 to believeG4100 onG1519 him, but alsoG2532 to sufferG3958 for his sake;

KJVP PHP 1:30 HavingG2192 the sameG846 conflictG73 whichG3634 ye sawG1492 in me, and nowG3568 hearG191 to be in me.
