Work on the 'The Holy Bible in Modern English' began in 1853 by a London businessman named Ferrar Fenton (1832–1920). The complete Bible was first published in 1903, though some individual bible 'books' were published as separate volumes during the preceding 11 years.
Fenton is well known for a rearranging of the books of the Bible into what the author believed was the correct chronological order. In the Old Testament, this order follows that of the Hebrew Bible. The name of God was translated throughout the Old Testament as "The Ever-Living".
Fenton is an exciting translation that shows respect and gives clarity in many areas where other translations fall short. This Bible is described as being "translated into English direct from the original Hebrew, Chaldee, and Greek languages."

Henrik Borgström assisted Fenton with his translation of the Book of Job, which first appeared in 1898. The book of Job was "rendered into the same metre as the original Hebrew, word by word and line by line". His translation of the New Testament is based on the Greek text of Westcott and Hort. The ordering novelty in the New Testament is that it places the Gospel of John and the First Epistle of John at the beginning before the Gospel of Matthew, thus placing the Acts of the Apostles immediately after the Gospel of Luke.

Notable as well, is Ferrar Fenton's restoration of the Psalms into the musical verse form as close to the original as he could get. The Psalms were, quite literally, songs, complete with instructions for the "choirmaster" as well as descriptions of the proper musical instruments to be used. Today Psalm 48, Psalm 137, and Psalm 23 are still sung in churches, albeit to tunes not the original.

This bible is named the "Revised Fenton" because it puts things back into chronological order. In many cases, whether in error or not, Ferrar moved some parts of the scriptures down to the footnote section. These re-ordered verses have been returned to their chronological order as they are currently found in the King James Version. There was no alteration of the wording or intended meaning of what was originally intended by Mr. Fenton."

Welcome to the new blog section. Join us in this exciting effort to display the works of Ferrar Fenton! The Holy Bible in Modern English is now fully digitized and can be seen for it's creative and artistic beauty as well as for the spiritual edification that we all need through the daily study of the scriptures.

This project actually began in 2012 when the conversion of scanned images, using OCR software, revived a very beautiful but tangled digital version of Ferrar Fenton's work. The major part of the editing, including verse alignment, OCR errors and chapter breaks took over one year. Still, as we go there are minor fixes to punctuation and a few odd necessary edits.

In its very raw form, 'The Holy Bible in Modern English' went online with a free but very undependable web hosting service in 2014, where it has been ever since.
With thanks to the generosity of others, just recently, the site has been moved to its current home. This hosting service is by far superior to the previous but costs are high so we are maintaining an ad service to help offset the costs.

RF REV 3:1

To the Assembly in Sardis.
To the messenger to the assembly in Sardis write: "Thus says the Master of the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars: I know your position, that you are reputed to live; yet you are dead.

RF REV 3:2 Become watchful, and henceforward stand firm, who are about to die; because I have found none of your actions perfected in the presence of My God.

RF REV 3:3 Remember, therefore, how you were instructed and taught. Hold it, and reform! However, if you are not watchful, I shall come like a thief, and you shall not know the time of My coming upon you.

RF REV 3:4 Yet you have a small number in Sardis, who have not soiled their clothing; and they shall walk with Me in white; because they. are worthy.

RF REV 3:5 The conqueror shall be arrayed in white robes; and I will not erase his name from the Book of Life; but I will acknowledge his name in the presence of My Father, and in the presence of His angels.

RF REV 3:6 "Whoever has an ear, let him listen to what the Spirit says to the assemblies."

RF REV 3:7 To the Assembly in Philadelphia.
To the messenger to the assembly in Philadelphia write; "Thus says the Holy, the True, the Holder of the key of David, Who opens and none can shut, Who shuts and none can open.

RF REV 3:8 I know your position. See I have placed before you an open door, and none can shut it; although you have little power, yet you have guarded My message, and have not denied My Name.

RF REV 3:9 Therefore, I will give these of the synagogue of Satan, who assert themselves to be Jews, and are not, but lie; I will make them come and bow before your feet, and know that I have loved you.

RF REV 3:10 Because you have guarded My message resolutely, I also will guard you in the time of trial, which is coming upon all the inhabited world, to test those who dwell upon the earth.

RF REV 3:11 I come soon. Secure what you possess, so that none may rob you of your crown,

RF REV 3:12 The conqueror —I will make him a pillar in the sanctuary of My God, and he shall never be put out of it; and I will write upon him the name of My God, and the name of the city of My God, the New Jerusalem, which will descend out of heaven from My God, as well as My own new Name.

RF REV 3:13 "Whoever has an ear, let him listen to what the Spirit says to the assemblies."

RF REV 3:14 To the Assembly in Loadicea.
To the Messenger to the assembly in Laodicea write: "Thus says the Veritable, the Faithful and True Witness, the Beginner of God's Creation:

RF REV 3:15 I know your position, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish that you were either cold or hot.

RF REV 3:16 So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will vomit you out of My mouth.

RF REV 3:17 Because you say, 'I am rich, having become wealthy, and have need of nothing;' and do not know that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked:

RF REV 3:18 I advise you to purchase from Me gold refined by fire, in order that you may become rich; and white clothing, so that you may clothe yourself, and prevent the shame of your nakedness being visible; and ointment to apply to your eyes, in order that you may see.

RF REV 3:19 I examine and instruct as many as I love. Therefore be in earnest, and change your mind.

RF REV 3:20 Attend! I stand at the door and knock; if any one should hear My voice, and will open the door, I will come in and dine with him, and he with Me.

RF REV 3:21 The conqueror —to him I will give the privilege of sitting with Myself on My throne, as I also conquered, and sat with My Father upon His throne.

RF REV 3:22 "Whoever has an ear, let him listen to what the Spirit says to the assemblies."
