RF LUK 13:1 Pilate and the Galileans.
There arrived at that very moment some who informed Him about the Galilean, whose blood Pilate had mixed with that of their sacrifices.
RF LUK 13:2 "Do you think," said Jesus in reply to them, "that those Galilean were the greatest sinners in all Galilee, because they were subjected to such usage?
RF LUK 13:3 By no means, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all be lost in the same way.
RF LUK 13:4 Or those eighteen upon whom the tower of Siloam fell, and killed them—do you think that they were the greatest sinners of all the inhabitants of Jerusalem?
RF LUK 13:5 Not at all; but unless you change your minds, the whole of you will be destroyed in the same way.
RF LUK 13:6 The Unfruitful Fig Tree.
He also related this parable to them: "There was a man who had a fig-tree planted in his garden; and he came looking for fruit upon it, but found none.
RF LUK 13:7 He then said to the gardener, 'This is the third year I have come looking for fruit upon this fig-tree, and have found none; cut it down: why should it exhaust the ground?'
RF LUK 13:8 'Let it alone, sir, for one year longer,' he answered him, 'until I dig about it, and manure it:
RF LUK 13:9 when, perhaps, it may produce fruit; but if not, you can afterwards cut it down.'"
RF LUK 13:10 Suffering and Sabbatarianism.
While He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath,
RF LUK 13:11 a woman was present, who, for eighteen years, was held fast by a spirit of infirmity; and she was so bent, that she could not at any time straighten herself.
RF LUK 13:12 But when Jesus saw her, He called her, and said to her, "Woman, you are freed from your weakness."
RF LUK 13:13 And, placing His hands upon her, she was at once cured, and praised God.
RF LUK 13:14 The chief of the synagogue, mad with rage because Jesus had performed a cure on the Sabbath, exclaimed to the people, "There are six days during which work should be done; come, therefore, on those days to be cured, and not on the Day of Rest."
RF LUK 13:15 "You hypocrites!" the Master answered; "does not each one of you loose his ox or his ass from the stall, on the Rest-Day, and lead it to drink?
RF LUK 13:16 And this woman, who is a daughter of Abraham, whom his enemy has bound for eighteen years, ought she not to be loosed from this bond on the Day of Rest?"
RF LUK 13:17 And when He said this, all His opponents were ashamed; and the whole assembly rejoiced on account of the glorious deeds which were done by Him.
RF LUK 13:18 The Kingdom of God Illustrated.
"To what is the Kingdom of God like?" He now asked; "and to what shall I compare it?
RF LUK 13:19 It is like a grain of mustard-seed, which a man took, and sowed in his own garden; and, growing, it became a large shrub, under the branches of which the birds of the sky came and took shelter."
RF LUK 13:20 Again He said, "To what shall I liken the Kingdom of God?
RF LUK 13:21 It is like yeast, which a woman took, and mixed in three measures of flour, until the whole was fermented."
RF LUK 13:22 The Narrow Gateway.
He was travelling now through the towns and villages, teaching, and making His way towards Jerusalem,
RF LUK 13:23 when some one asked Him, "Master, will only a few be saved?"
RF LUK 13:24 "Force yourselves through that narrow gateway," He answered them; "for many, I assure you, will endeavor to enter in, whose strength will not be equal to it.
RF LUK 13:25 When once the Master of the house has arisen, and locked the door, and you, standing outside, begin to knock at the door, and call out, 'Master, open for us!' He will answer you, 'I do not know where you come from!'
RF LUK 13:26 Then you will begin to say, 'We have eaten and drunk in Your company, and You have taught in our streets.'
RF LUK 13:27 But He will reply to you, 'I do not know where you come from; be gone from Me, all you doers of iniquity.'
RF LUK 13:28 There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you shall see Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, as well as all the prophets, admitted to the Kingdom of God, but yourselves excluded.
RF LUK 13:29 And they shall come from the east, the west, the north, and the south, and recline in the Kingdom of God.
RF LUK 13:30 For those last shall be first; and these first shall be last."
RF LUK 13:31 A Message to Herod Antipas.
At that time, some Pharisees approached Him, saying, "Go out, and depart from here! for Herod intends to murder You."
RF LUK 13:32 He answered them, "Go and tell that vixen,1 'Look! I will expel demons and effect cures to-day and to-morrow, and on the third day I shall complete My work.
RF LUK 13:33 I must travel, however, to-day and to-morrow, as well as the following day; because it cannot be expected that a prophet should be murdered outside Jerusalem!'
RF LUK 13:34 "O Jerusalem! Jerusalem! who murdered the prophets, and stoned those sent to you! how often have I longed to collect your children as a hen gathers her brood under her wings; but you would not!
RF LUK 13:35 Alas! your house is now left to yourselves alone; for I tell you that you shall not see Me again until the time comes when you shall say, BLESS HIM WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD!"2
