   Work on the 'The Holy Bible in Modern English' began in 1853 by a London businessman named Ferrar Fenton (1832–1920). The complete Bible was first published in 1903, though some individual bible 'books' were published as separate volumes during the preceding 11 years.
   Fenton is well known for a rearranging of the books of the Bible into what the author believed was the correct chronological order. In the Old Testament, this order follows that of the Hebrew Bible. The name of God was translated throughout the Old Testament as "The Ever-Living".
   Fenton is an exciting translation that shows respect and gives clarity in many areas where other translations fall short. This Bible is described as being "translated into English direct from the original Hebrew, Chaldee, and Greek languages."

    Henrik Borgström assisted Fenton with his translation of the Book of Job, which first appeared in 1898. The book of Job was "rendered into the same metre as the original Hebrew, word by word and line by line". His translation of the New Testament is based on the Greek text of Westcott and Hort. The ordering novelty in the New Testament is that it places the Gospel of John and the First Epistle of John at the beginning before the Gospel of Matthew, thus placing the Acts of the Apostles immediately after the Gospel of Luke.

   Notable as well, is Ferrar Fenton's restoration of the Psalms into the musical verse form as close to the original as he could get. The Psalms were, quite literally, songs, complete with instructions for the "choirmaster" as well as descriptions of the proper musical instruments to be used. Today Psalm 48, Psalm 137, and Psalm 23 are still sung in churches, albeit to tunes not the original.

   This bible is named the "Revised Fenton" because it puts things back into chronological order. In many cases, whether in error or not, Ferrar moved some parts of the scriptures down to the footnote section. These re-ordered verses have been returned to their chronological order as they are currently found in the King James Version. There was no alteration of the wording or intended meaning of what was originally intended by Mr. Fenton."

Blog entry: September 17, 2016

   Welcome to the new blog section. Join us in this exciting effort to display the works of Ferrar Fenton! The Holy Bible in Modern English is now fully digitized and can be seen for it's creative and artistic beauty as well as for the spiritual edification that we all need through the daily study of the scriptures.

   This project actually began in 2012 when the conversion of scanned images, using OCR software, revived a very beautiful but tangled digital version of Ferrar Fenton's work. The major part of the editing, including verse alignment, OCR errors and chapter breaks took over one year. Still, as we go there are minor fixes to punctuation and a few odd necessary edits.

   In its very raw form, 'The Holy Bible in Modern English' went online with a free but very undependable web hosting service in 2014, where it has been ever since.
   With thanks to the generosity of others, just recently, the site has been moved to its current home. This hosting service is by far superior to the previous but costs are high so we are maintaining an ad service to help offset the costs.

RF EXO 19:1

Israel Arrives at Sinai.
At the third month from the coming out of the land of the Mitzeraim, on that day they came to the desert of Sinai.

RF EXO 19:2 Then the Rephidim also marched and came to the desert of Sinai, and encamped in the desert. Israel also encamped there near the hill.

RF EXO 19:3 God Appears to Moses.
Then Moses went up to God, and the EVER-LIVING, called to him from the hill saying;—"Say this to the House of Jacob, and inform the

RF EXO 19:4 children of Israel, You have seen what I did to the Mitzeraim, and lifted you on the wings of eagles, and brought you to Me,

RF EXO 19:5 so now if you will listen to My voice, and keep My laws, then you shall be to Me a peculiar People, more than all the Peoples of the earth.

RF EXO 19:6 And you shall be to Me a Royal Priesthood, and a Holy Nation.'—These are the words you shall speak to the children of Israel."

RF EXO 19:7 Moses consequently went and assembled the nobles of the People, and set before them the whole of these promises as the EVER-LIVING commanded.

RF EXO 19:8 And all the People answered at once, and said, "We will do all the EVER-LIVING Commands." Then Moses reported the declaration of the People to the EVER-LIVING.

RF EXO 19:9 And the EVER-LIVING replied to Moses, "Now I will come to you. In a cloud of fire I will pass by. The People shall hear Me talk with you, and also I will remain with you always." Then Moses reported the declaration of the People to the EVER-LIVING.

RF EXO 19:10 When the EVER-LIVING replied to Moses; "Go to the People and sanctify them today, and tomorrow, and wash their clothes,

RF EXO 19:11 and on the third day let them assemble; for on the third day the EVER-LIVING will descend in the sight of all the People upon Mount Sinai.

RF EXO 19:12 But you shall keep the people at a distance around, by ordering, 'Take care that you do not go up to the Hill, or touch its skirts. All who touch the Hill shall die,

RF EXO 19:13 Whether a beast or a man, let them not touch it with the hand or they shall be stoned with stones, or pierced with a dart; they shall not live who approach to ascend the Hill.

RF EXO 19:14 Consequently Moses descended from the Hill to the People, and sanctified the people, and they washed their clothing.

RF EXO 19:15 And he said, "Restrain yourselves for three days, not to touch a woman."

RF EXO 19:16 The Divine Manifestation on Sinai.
When the third day came to the day-break, there were voices and lightnings, and a heavy cloud over the Hill, and the sound of a powerful trumpet, so that all the people in the camp trembled.

RF EXO 19:17 Then Moses brought out from the camp all the people to meet GOD, and stationed them below the Hill.

RF EXO 19:18 And the Hill of Sinai smoked all over its surface, when the EVER-LIVING descended upon it in fire; and its smoke went up like the smoke of a smelting furnace, and the whole hill trembled greatly;

RF EXO 19:19 and there was the continuous sound of a trumpet; but Moses very boldly spoke, and GOD answered him by voice.

RF EXO 19:20 Then the EVER-LIVING descended to the Hill of Sinai, on to the top of the Hill, and the EVER-LIVING called Moses to the top of the Hill, and Moses ascended.

RF EXO 19:21 Then the EVER-LIVING said to Moses, "Descend at once to the People for fear they should break through to see, and numbers fall before Me.

RF EXO 19:22 Let the Priests also who sacrifice to the EVER-LIVING sanctify themselves, lest the LORD afflict them." But Moses replied to the EVER-LIVING;

RF EXO 19:23 "The people cannot ascend the Hill of Sinai, for You commanded us, saying, 'Go a distance from the Hill, and sanctify yourselves.'"

RF EXO 19:24 The EVER-LIVING, however, answered him; "Go! Descend! and return, you, and Aaron with you. But the Priests, and the people must not attempt to ascend to the LORD, lest He afflict them."

RF EXO 19:25 So Moses descended to the people and spoke to them.
