Work on the 'The Holy Bible in Modern English' began in 1853 by a London businessman named Ferrar Fenton (1832–1920). The complete Bible was first published in 1903, though some individual bible 'books' were published as separate volumes during the preceding 11 years.
Fenton is well known for a rearranging of the books of the Bible into what the author believed was the correct chronological order. In the Old Testament, this order follows that of the Hebrew Bible. The name of God was translated throughout the Old Testament as "The Ever-Living".
Fenton is an exciting translation that shows respect and gives clarity in many areas where other translations fall short. This Bible is described as being "translated into English direct from the original Hebrew, Chaldee, and Greek languages."

Henrik Borgström assisted Fenton with his translation of the Book of Job, which first appeared in 1898. The book of Job was "rendered into the same metre as the original Hebrew, word by word and line by line". His translation of the New Testament is based on the Greek text of Westcott and Hort. The ordering novelty in the New Testament is that it places the Gospel of John and the First Epistle of John at the beginning before the Gospel of Matthew, thus placing the Acts of the Apostles immediately after the Gospel of Luke.

Notable as well, is Ferrar Fenton's restoration of the Psalms into the musical verse form as close to the original as he could get. The Psalms were, quite literally, songs, complete with instructions for the "choirmaster" as well as descriptions of the proper musical instruments to be used. Today Psalm 48, Psalm 137, and Psalm 23 are still sung in churches, albeit to tunes not the original.

This bible is named the "Revised Fenton" because it puts things back into chronological order. In many cases, whether in error or not, Ferrar moved some parts of the scriptures down to the footnote section. These re-ordered verses have been returned to their chronological order as they are currently found in the King James Version. There was no alteration of the wording or intended meaning of what was originally intended by Mr. Fenton."

Blog entry: September 17, 2016

Welcome to the new blog section. Join us in this exciting effort to display the works of Ferrar Fenton! The Holy Bible in Modern English is now fully digitized and can be seen for it's creative and artistic beauty as well as for the spiritual edification that we all need through the daily study of the scriptures.

This project actually began in 2012 when the conversion of scanned images, using OCR software, revived a very beautiful but tangled digital version of Ferrar Fenton's work. The major part of the editing, including verse alignment, OCR errors and chapter breaks took over one year. Still, as we go there are minor fixes to punctuation and a few odd necessary edits.

In its very raw form, 'The Holy Bible in Modern English' went online with a free but very undependable web hosting service in 2014, where it has been ever since.
With thanks to the generosity of others, just recently, the site has been moved to its current home. This hosting service is by far superior to the previous but costs are high so we are maintaining an ad service to help offset the costs.

RF CH2 33:1 (698 B.C.) Menasseh begins to Reign.
Manasseh was twelve years old at his coronation, and reigned fifty-five years in Jerusalem.

RF CH2 33:2 The Idolatry and Wickedness of Manasseh.
But he did wrong in the eyes of the EVER-LIVING, like the abominable heathen, whom the EVER-LIVING had driven out from before the children of Israel,

RF CH2 33:3 and went and rebuilt the mounds that Hezekiah his father had overturned, and raised altars to Balm, and made Lust-booths,—and bowed to all the Host of the skies, and served them.

RF CH2 33:4 He also built altars in the House of the LORD, where the EVER-LIVING had said to Jerusalem, His NAME should be forever!

RF CH2 33:5 Yes He built altars to all the Host of the skies, in the Second Court of the House of the EVER-LIVING!

RF CH2 33:6 He, himself, also, passed his children to the fire in the Valley of Ben-hinom I and to clouds, and snakes, and incantations; and practiced necromancy with ventriloquists; and did much evil in the sight of the EVER-LIVING, to provoke Him.

RF CH2 33:7 He also placed an Image of the Imagination which he had formed, in the House of GOD; of which GOD had said to David, and Solomon his son, " In this House, and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the Tribes of Israel, to fix My NAME for ever.

RF CH2 33:8 And I will not again turn the foot of Israel off from the ground that I appointed for their fathers;—if only they will practice all that I directed them, and all My Laws, and Institutions, and Decrees by the hand of Moses."

RF CH2 33:9 (677 B.C.) Yet Manasseh seduced Judea, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to practice depravity more than the Heathen whom the EVER-LIVING wasted before the face of the Children of Israel.

RF CH2 33:10 The EVER-LIVING, however, spoke to Manasseh and to his people, but they would not listen.

RF CH2 33:11 Consequently the EVER-LIVING brought upon them the Generals of the Army of the Kings of Ashur, who took Manasseh with hooks, and chained him in chains, and transferred him to Babel,

RF CH2 33:12 when in his distress he appeased the anger of the EVER-LIVING GOD, and humbled himself very greatly before the GOD of his fathers,

RF CH2 33:13 and prayed to Him, Who pitied, and listened to his supplication, and restored him to Jerusalem, to his Kingship. Then Manasseh acknowledged that the EVER-LIVING was GOD.

RF CH2 33:14 Manasseh Repents his Apostasy, and Restores God's Worship.
After that he built an outer wall to the City of David, alongside of the brook Ghihon, and extending to the Fish-gate, and around the hill, and it was very high. He also placed Military Officers in all the Fortified Cities of Judea;

RF CH2 33:15 and threw out the foreign GODs, and the Image from the House of the EVER-LIVING, and all the altars he had built on the Hill of the LORD'S House, and in Jerusalem, and flung them out of the City.

RF CH2 33:16 Then he rebuilt the Altar of the EVER-LIVING, and sacrificed upon it Thank-offerings, and confessed, and promised to the EVER-LIVING, to serve the LIVING GOD of Israel.

RF CH2 33:17 However, the people still sacrificed at the Mounds, but only to the EVER-LIVING GOD.

RF CH2 33:18 Summary of his life.
But the other acts of Manasseh, and his prayer to his GOD, and the speeches of the Seers, who addressed him in the NAME of the LIVING GOD of Israel, can be seen in the Histories of the Kings of Israel,

RF CH2 33:19 with his prayer, and the pity shown him, with all his sins and wickedness, and the places in which he built mounds, and set up Lust-booths and Idols before he repented, can be read as recorded in the Books of the Seers.

RF CH2 33:20 (641 B.C.) At last Manasseh slept with his fathers, and they buried him in his own Palace, and Amon his son reigned in his place.

RF CH2 33:21 Amon begins to Reign.
Amon was twenty-two years old at his coronation, and reigned two years in Jerusalem,

RF CH2 33:22 and did evil in the sight of the EVER-LIVING, as Manasseh his father had done; and to all the Idols that his father had made Amon sacrificed and served.

RF CH2 33:23 And he never repented before the EVER-LIVING, as his father Manasseh repented; but Amon himself offended more.

RF CH2 33:24 (639 B.C.) Amon murdered by his ministers, who are afterwards Murdered by a Popular Revolution.
His Ministers consequently conspired against him, and killed him in his own Palace.

RF CH2 33:25 But the People of the country assailed all the conspirators against King Amon; then the country people elected Joash his son King in his place.
