Work on the 'The Holy Bible in Modern English' began in 1853 by a London businessman named Ferrar Fenton (1832–1920). The complete Bible was first published in 1903, though some individual bible 'books' were published as separate volumes during the preceding 11 years.
Fenton is well known for a rearranging of the books of the Bible into what the author believed was the correct chronological order. In the Old Testament, this order follows that of the Hebrew Bible. The name of God was translated throughout the Old Testament as "The Ever-Living".
Fenton is an exciting translation that shows respect and gives clarity in many areas where other translations fall short. This Bible is described as being "translated into English direct from the original Hebrew, Chaldee, and Greek languages."

Henrik Borgström assisted Fenton with his translation of the Book of Job, which first appeared in 1898. The book of Job was "rendered into the same metre as the original Hebrew, word by word and line by line". His translation of the New Testament is based on the Greek text of Westcott and Hort. The ordering novelty in the New Testament is that it places the Gospel of John and the First Epistle of John at the beginning before the Gospel of Matthew, thus placing the Acts of the Apostles immediately after the Gospel of Luke.

Notable as well, is Ferrar Fenton's restoration of the Psalms into the musical verse form as close to the original as he could get. The Psalms were, quite literally, songs, complete with instructions for the "choirmaster" as well as descriptions of the proper musical instruments to be used. Today Psalm 48, Psalm 137, and Psalm 23 are still sung in churches, albeit to tunes not the original.

This bible is named the "Revised Fenton" because it puts things back into chronological order. In many cases, whether in error or not, Ferrar moved some parts of the scriptures down to the footnote section. These re-ordered verses have been returned to their chronological order as they are currently found in the King James Version. There was no alteration of the wording or intended meaning of what was originally intended by Mr. Fenton."

Welcome to the new blog section. Join us in this exciting effort to display the works of Ferrar Fenton! The Holy Bible in Modern English is now fully digitized and can be seen for it's creative and artistic beauty as well as for the spiritual edification that we all need through the daily study of the scriptures.

This project actually began in 2012 when the conversion of scanned images, using OCR software, revived a very beautiful but tangled digital version of Ferrar Fenton's work. The major part of the editing, including verse alignment, OCR errors and chapter breaks took over one year. Still, as we go there are minor fixes to punctuation and a few odd necessary edits.

In its very raw form, 'The Holy Bible in Modern English' went online with a free but very undependable web hosting service in 2014, where it has been ever since.
With thanks to the generosity of others, just recently, the site has been moved to its current home. This hosting service is by far superior to the previous but costs are high so we are maintaining an ad service to help offset the costs.

RF MAT 2:1

The Visit of the Magi.
Soon after the birth of Jesus, in Bethlehem of Judea, during the reign of King Herod, there arrived in Jerusalem Magi from the east,

RF MAT 2:2 who inquired: "Where is the newly-born King of the Jews? for we have seen His star in the east, and we have come to pay Him homage.

RF MAT 2:3 "When Herod the king heard this, he was terrified, and all Jerusalem with him.

RF MAT 2:4 So assembling the chief priests and professors, he demanded of them where the Messiah would be born.

RF MAT 2:5 They replied, "In Bethlehem of Judea", for it is recorded by the prophet:

RF MAT 2:6 AND YOU, BETHLEHEM, JUDAH'S LAND, ARE NOT THE LEAST AMONG THE DISTRICTS OF JUDAH; FOR OUT OF YOU SHALL COME THE LEADER, WHO SHALL SHEPHERD MY PEOPLE ISRAEL.1

RF MAT 2:7 Then Herod, having privately interviewed the Magi, ascertained from them the exact time when the star made its appearance.

RF MAT 2:8 He then sent them to Bethlehem, remarking, "When you arrive, ascertain very carefully everything about that Child; and when you have discovered all, inform me, so that I may also come and pay Him homage."

RF MAT 2:9 Having listened to the king, they accordingly proceeded on their way; and observed that the star which they had seen at its rising, went before them, until arriving, it rested above the place where the Child was.

RF MAT 2:10 When they observed the star, they rejoiced with very great delight.

RF MAT 2:11 And having come to the house, they saw the young Child with His mother Mary; and prostrating themselves, they paid Him homage: and having opened their treasures, they presented Him with gold, frankincense, and myrrh, as a tribute.

RF MAT 2:12 And having been instructed by a dream not to return to Herod, they accordingly departed to their own country by another road.

RF MAT 2:13 The Flight into Egypt.
After their departure, a messenger from the Lord also appeared to Joseph in a vision, saying: "Arise! take the child and His mother, and fly to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is about to hunt out the Child to murder Him.

RF MAT 2:14 Arising, he accordingly took the Child and His mother by night, and removed to Egypt,

RF MAT 2:15 remaining there until the death of Herod; so that the statement from the Lord, through the prophet, might be fulfilled, which declared: I CALLED MY SON OUT OF EGYPT.2

RF MAT 2:16 The Massacre of the Innocents.
Then Herod, when he found that he had been deceived by the Magi, was savagely furious; and sending to Bethlehem, he murdered all the male children there, as well as all that were in the neighborhood, from two years of age and under, so as to include the date which he had ascertained from the Magi.

RF MAT 2:17 Then was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet Jeremiah:

RF MAT 2:18 I HEARD A SOUND OF GRIEF IN RAMAH, WEEPING AND GREAT ANGUISH: RACHEL WEEPING FOR HER CHILDREN: AND SHE CANNOT BE CONSOLED, BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT.1

RF MAT 2:19 When Herod was dead, however, a messenger of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a vision, while in Egypt,

RF MAT 2:20 and said: "Arise! take the Child and His mother, and go into the land of Israel; for they are dead who sought the Child's life."

RF MAT 2:21 He then arose, took the Child and His mother, and came into the land of Israel.

RF MAT 2:22 Hearing, however, that Archelaus reigned over Judea in the place of his father Herod, he was afraid to return there: and having been also warned by a dream, he withdrew into the district of Galilee.

RF MAT 2:23 And on arriving, he settled in a town named Nazareth; so that the prediction through the prophet was fulfilled which said that he should be considered A NAZARENE.2
