Work on the 'The Holy Bible in Modern English' began in 1853 by a London businessman named Ferrar Fenton (1832–1920). The complete Bible was first published in 1903, though some individual bible 'books' were published as separate volumes during the preceding 11 years.
Fenton is well known for a rearranging of the books of the Bible into what the author believed was the correct chronological order. In the Old Testament, this order follows that of the Hebrew Bible. The name of God was translated throughout the Old Testament as "The Ever-Living".
Fenton is an exciting translation that shows respect and gives clarity in many areas where other translations fall short. This Bible is described as being "translated into English direct from the original Hebrew, Chaldee, and Greek languages."
Henrik Borgström assisted Fenton with his translation of the Book of Job, which first appeared in 1898. The book of Job was "rendered into the same metre as the original Hebrew, word by word and line by line". His translation of the New Testament is based on the Greek text of Westcott and Hort. The ordering novelty in the New Testament is that it places the Gospel of John and the First Epistle of John at the beginning before the Gospel of Matthew, thus placing the Acts of the Apostles immediately after the Gospel of Luke.
Notable as well, is Ferrar Fenton's restoration of the Psalms into the musical verse form as close to the original as he could get. The Psalms were, quite literally, songs, complete with instructions for the "choirmaster" as well as descriptions of the proper musical instruments to be used. Today Psalm 48, Psalm 137, and Psalm 23 are still sung in churches, albeit to tunes not the original.
This bible is named the "Revised Fenton" because it puts things back into chronological order. In many cases, whether in error or not, Ferrar moved some parts of the scriptures down to the footnote section. These re-ordered verses have been returned to their chronological order as they are currently found in the King James Version. There was no alteration of the wording or intended meaning of what was originally intended by Mr. Fenton."
Welcome to the new blog section. Join us in this exciting effort to display the works of Ferrar Fenton! The Holy Bible in Modern English is now fully digitized and can be seen for it's creative and artistic beauty as well as for the spiritual edification that we all need through the daily study of the scriptures.
This project actually began in 2012 when the conversion of scanned images, using OCR software, revived a very beautiful but tangled digital version of Ferrar Fenton's work. The major part of the editing, including verse alignment, OCR errors and chapter breaks took over one year. Still, as we go there are minor fixes to punctuation and a few odd necessary edits.
In its very raw form, 'The Holy Bible in Modern English' went online with a free but very undependable web hosting service in 2014, where it has been ever since.
With thanks to the generosity of others, just recently, the site has been moved to its current home. This hosting service is by far superior to the previous but costs are high so we are maintaining an ad service to help offset the costs.

|RF PSA 105:2|| Sing to Him; Chant to Him,
And think of His wonders;
|RF PSA 105:3|| Praise His HOLY NAME;
And seek the LORD gladly;
|RF PSA 105:4|| Seek the LORD and His might,
Always search for His face,
|RF PSA 105:5|| Remembering His wonders;—
The portents and judgments He gave,
|RF PSA 105:6|| Race of Abraham His friend,—
Sons of Jacob, His chosen!
|RF PSA 105:7|| STANZA 2.
For our GOD is Life;
Who rules on the earth;
|RF PSA 105:8||Remember His Bond for thousands of ages,|
|RF PSA 105:9|| With Abraham He fixed,
Which to Isaac He promised,
|RF PSA 105:10|| And settled with Jacob—
The Bond made with Israel,—
|RF PSA 105:11|| "I give you this land,
Of wide Canan to hold,"
|RF PSA 105:12|| When but few in number,
So little and strangers,
|RF PSA 105:13|| Among Tribes they wandered,
Alone in the kingdoms,
|RF PSA 105:14|| He let no man hurt them;
Punished Kings for their sakes,—
|RF PSA 105:15|| "Touch not Mine Anointed,
Do My Preachers no harm!"
|RF PSA 105:16|| STANZA 3.
He sent dearth on the earth,
And He broke the whole staff of bread
|RF PSA 105:17|| Sent before them a man,
Sold Joseph to slavery,
|RF PSA 105:18|| Put his feet in the stocks,
Iron pierced to his soul;—
|RF PSA 105:19|| Till the time had arrived.
The LORD'S action refined.—
|RF PSA 105:20|| The King sent and released,
The Tribes' Chief then set free,—
|RF PSA 105:21|| Made Prince of his House,
And to rule all his wealth;
|RF PSA 105:22|| By His will guide His Chiefs,
And his Nobles instruct.
|RF PSA 105:23|| STANZA 4.
He brought Israel to Mitzer.—
Jacob lodged in Ham's land.
|RF PSA 105:24|| There His People increased,
Grew to more than their foes
|RF PSA 105:25|| Whose heart rose to hate,
And to murder His Race.
|RF PSA 105:26|| STANZA 5.
He sent Moses His servant,
And His chosen Aaron,
|RF PSA 105:27|| With wondrous powers,
And signs, to Ham's land.
|RF PSA 105:28|| Sent gloom and it darkened,—
Obeying His power,—
|RF PSA 105:29|| To blood turned their streams,
And sent death to their fish,—
|RF PSA 105:30|| Shot frogs on their land,
And the beds of their King!—
|RF PSA 105:31|| He spoke, locusts came,
And lice in their bounds.—
|RF PSA 105:32|| He gave pouring hail,
Fire flamed in their land.—
|RF PSA 105:33|| Struck their vines and figs,
And smashed all the trees!—
|RF PSA 105:34|| He spoke—vermin came,
And unnumbered, devoured;
|RF PSA 105:35|| Ate all herbs in their land;—
Ate all fruits on the ground!—
|RF PSA 105:36|| He struck their country's heirs,
The first fruit of their love;
|RF PSA 105:37|| But brought us out with wealth,
We were not lame or weak;—
|RF PSA 105:38|| Mitzer joyed as we went,
For great fear fell on her!
|RF PSA 105:39|| STANZA 6.
He spread cloud to shade;—
Fire lighted by night
|RF PSA 105:40|| They asked,—HE brought quails
The skies filled with bread
|RF PSA 105:41|| Springs leaped from the rocks,
In Deserts brooks flowed
|RF PSA 105:42|| His Word he kept true,
To Abraham His friend.
|RF PSA 105:43|| Led His Race with joy,
With cheering His chosen,
|RF PSA 105:44|| Gave them Heathen lands,
And works of those Tribes,
|RF PSA 105:45|| If they keep His decrees,
And always His laws:—
Give LIVING LIFE thanks.
