RF JER 26:1 Judah Denounced for His Sins.
In the beginning of the reign of Jhoiakim-ben-Joshiah, king of Judah, this message came from the EVER-LIVING to say:—
RF JER 26:2 "Thus, says the EVER-LIVING, Stand in the court of the House of the EVER-LIVING, and proclaim to all the citizens of Judah who come to worship in the House of the EVER-LIVING, all the messages that I order you to deliver to them. Omit not a word!
RF JER 26:3 Perhaps they may each turn from their wicked way, when I will regret the misery I intend to make for them, because of their wicked proceedings.
RF JER 26:4 Say to them, Thus says the EVER-LIVING, 'If you will not listen to Me, and walk in the laws that I place before you,
RF JER 26:5 and listen to the words of My servants the Preachers, whom I send to you, rising early and sending, although you have not listened,
RF JER 26:6 then I will make this House like Shiloh, and make this city the scorn of all the nations of the earth.'"
RF JER 26:7 When the Priests, and the Preachers, and all the people heard Jeremiah proclaiming these messages in the House of the EVER-LIVING,—
RF JER 26:8 and when Jeremiah had finished delivering all that the EVER-LIVING had ordered him to speak to all the people, the Priests, and Preachers, and all the people seized him, exclaiming, "You shall die!
RF JER 26:9 Why have you proclaimed in the name of the EVER-LIVING, asserting that 'this House shall become like Shiloh, and this city a burnt ruin without inhabitants?'" Then all the people collected about Jeremiah at the House of the EVER-LIVING.
RF JER 26:10 The officials of Judah also heard of these speeches, and went up from the palace of the king to the House of the EVER-LIVING, and sat in front of the New Gate of the LORD.
RF JER 26:11 There the Priests and Preachers addressed the officials, and all the people, and demanded a "Sentence of death for this man, for he has proclaimed about this city what your own ears have heard!"
RF JER 26:12 But Jeremiah replied to all the officials, and all the people, and said,
"The EVER-LIVING sent me to proclaim to this House, and to this city, all the messages that you have heard.
RF JER 26:13 Therefore, now, amend your courses and your ways, and listen to the voice of your EVER-LIVING GOD,—when the EVER-LIVING will relent from the misery He has spoken against you.
RF JER 26:14 As for myself, I am in your hands. Do to me what is right, and what is just in your opinion.
RF JER 26:15 However know this, that if you kill me, you will put innocent blood upon yourselves, and upon this city, and upon its inhabitants. For in truth the EVER-LIVING sent me to you to speak in your hearing all these speeches."
RF JER 26:16 Consequently the officials, and all the people, said to the Priests and Preachers, "There is no reason for a Death Sentence on this man, for he has spoken to us in the Name of our EVER-LIVING GOD."
RF JER 26:17 Then the Chief Judges of the country arose and addressed the whole assembly of the people, saying—
RF JER 26:18 "Mikiah, the Moroshite, was a Preacher in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah, and he spoke to the people of Judah to proclaim:—'Thus says the LORD OF HOSTS, Zion shall be a ploughed field, and Jerusalem become ruins, and the hill of this house be a forest of columns!'
RF JER 26:19 Did Hezekiah king of Judah, and all Judah, put him to death? Did he not fear the EVER-LIVING, and entreat the presence of the EVER-LIVING? And consequently the punishment that he proclaimed against them. And should we do so great a wrong to our souls?
RF JER 26:20 1 "There was also a man, Auriah-ben-Shemiah of Kirjath-jarim, who came preaching in the Name of the EVER-LIVING, who proclaimed against this city, and against this country, all the words of Jeremiah,
RF JER 26:21 and King Jhoiakim and his generals, and all his officials heard the speeches. So the king sought to kill Auriah. But when Auriah heard it he was afraid, and fled, and went to Mitzer.
RF JER 26:22 King Jhoiakim, however, sent officers to Mitzer, Alnathan-ben-Akbor, and officers with him to the Egyptians,
RF JER 26:23 who brought Auriah from Egypt, and conducted him to Jhoiakim who assailed him with the sword, and flung his body into the grave of the common people."
RF JER 26:24 However the party of Akhikamben-Shafan was with Jeremiah, and refused to give him to the power of the people for him to be put to death.

1. Some words seem lost here from the MSS., such as "Others replied, however; "" There was also, etc." It was evidently a debate amongst the Judges of the Court formed to try the Prophet.—F.F.
