Work on the 'The Holy Bible in Modern English' began in 1853 by a London businessman named Ferrar Fenton (1832–1920). The complete Bible was first published in 1903, though some individual bible 'books' were published as separate volumes during the preceding 11 years.
Fenton is well known for a rearranging of the books of the Bible into what the author believed was the correct chronological order. In the Old Testament, this order follows that of the Hebrew Bible. The name of God was translated throughout the Old Testament as "The Ever-Living".
Fenton is an exciting translation that shows respect and gives clarity in many areas where other translations fall short. This Bible is described as being "translated into English direct from the original Hebrew, Chaldee, and Greek languages."
Henrik Borgström assisted Fenton with his translation of the Book of Job, which first appeared in 1898. The book of Job was "rendered into the same metre as the original Hebrew, word by word and line by line". His translation of the New Testament is based on the Greek text of Westcott and Hort. The ordering novelty in the New Testament is that it places the Gospel of John and the First Epistle of John at the beginning before the Gospel of Matthew, thus placing the Acts of the Apostles immediately after the Gospel of Luke.
Notable as well, is Ferrar Fenton's restoration of the Psalms into the musical verse form as close to the original as he could get. The Psalms were, quite literally, songs, complete with instructions for the "choirmaster" as well as descriptions of the proper musical instruments to be used. Today Psalm 48, Psalm 137, and Psalm 23 are still sung in churches, albeit to tunes not the original.
This bible is named the "Revised Fenton" because it puts things back into chronological order. In many cases, whether in error or not, Ferrar moved some parts of the scriptures down to the footnote section. These re-ordered verses have been returned to their chronological order as they are currently found in the King James Version. There was no alteration of the wording or intended meaning of what was originally intended by Mr. Fenton."
Welcome to the new blog section. Join us in this exciting effort to display the works of Ferrar Fenton! The Holy Bible in Modern English is now fully digitized and can be seen for it's creative and artistic beauty as well as for the spiritual edification that we all need through the daily study of the scriptures.
This project actually began in 2012 when the conversion of scanned images, using OCR software, revived a very beautiful but tangled digital version of Ferrar Fenton's work. The major part of the editing, including verse alignment, OCR errors and chapter breaks took over one year. Still, as we go there are minor fixes to punctuation and a few odd necessary edits.
In its very raw form, 'The Holy Bible in Modern English' went online with a free but very undependable web hosting service in 2014, where it has been ever since.
With thanks to the generosity of others, just recently, the site has been moved to its current home. This hosting service is by far superior to the previous but costs are high so we are maintaining an ad service to help offset the costs.

Jesus Comforts His Disciples.
|RF JOH 14:2||In the home Of My Father there are many abodes. If it were not so, I would have told you; because I am going to prepare a place for you.|
|RF JOH 14:3||And after I have gone and prepared a place for you, I will return, and take you to Myself; so that where I am, there you may also be.|
|RF JOH 14:4||And where I am going, you know the way."|
|RF JOH 14:5||Thomas exclaimed to Him: "Master, we do not know where You are going; and how can we know the way?"|
|RF JOH 14:6||"I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life," Jesus answered him; " no one can come to the Father except through Me.|

|RF JOH 14:8||Philip replied to Him, "Master, show the Father to us, and that will satisfy us."|
|RF JOH 14:9||"Have I been with you all this time," replied Jesus, "and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who sees Me, sees the Father: why then do you say, Show us the Father?'|
|RF JOH 14:10||Do you not believe that I am with the Father, and the Father with Me? The statements which I deliver to you, I do not deliver from Myself. As to the works, the Father dwelling with Me does them Himself.|

|RF JOH 14:12||I tell you most truly that the believer in Me shall himself do the works which I do; and he shall do greater than these, because I am going to the Father.|
|RF JOH 14:13||And whatever you shall ask in My Name, that I will do, in order that the Father may be exalted in the Son.|

|RF JOH 14:18|| The Indwelling of the Father and the Son.
"I will not leave you fatherless; I am coming to you.
|RF JOH 14:19||A little while, and the world will see Me no more: but you will see Me;|
|RF JOH 14:20||because I am living, you will live also. In that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.|
|RF JOH 14:21||Whoever keeps My commands, and regards them, he it is who loves Me; and the one who loves Me will be loved by My Father; and I will love him, and will make Myself known to him."|
|RF JOH 14:22|| The Proof of Love.
Judas, not the Iscariot; asked Him: "Master, how will it happen that You will manifest Yourself to us, and yet not to the world?"
|RF JOH 14:23||"If any man loves Me," Jesus answered him, "He will retain My message; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him, and take up Our abode with him.|
|RF JOH 14:24||The one who does not love Me will not retain My message; and the message which you hear is not My own, but that of the Father Who sent Me.|
|RF JOH 14:25||I have told you this while remaining with you;|
|RF JOH 14:26||but the Helper, the Holy Spirit, Whom the Father will send with My power, He will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have Myself told you.|
|RF JOH 14:27|| The Legacy of His Peace.
"Peace I leave with you; My own peace I give to you. I do not give as the world gives. Do not allow your heart to be troubled, nor yet be discouraged.
|RF JOH 14:28||You have heard Me tell you, ' I am going away, and I am returning to you': if you had loved Me, you would have been glad, because I am going to the Father; for the Father is mightier than Myself.|
|RF JOH 14:29||And I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen, you may be convinced.|
|RF JOH 14:30||I shall not from now have much conversation with you; for the Prince of this world approaches, and he has nothing in common with Me;|
|RF JOH 14:31||but this is necessary in order that the world may learn that I love the Father, and act in accordance with His instructions. Arise, let us go forward from here!"|
