Work on the 'The Holy Bible in Modern English' began in 1853 by a London businessman named Ferrar Fenton (1832–1920). The complete Bible was first published in 1903, though some individual bible 'books' were published as separate volumes during the preceding 11 years.
Fenton is well known for a rearranging of the books of the Bible into what the author believed was the correct chronological order. In the Old Testament, this order follows that of the Hebrew Bible. The name of God was translated throughout the Old Testament as "The Ever-Living".
Fenton is an exciting translation that shows respect and gives clarity in many areas where other translations fall short. This Bible is described as being "translated into English direct from the original Hebrew, Chaldee, and Greek languages."
Henrik Borgström assisted Fenton with his translation of the Book of Job, which first appeared in 1898. The book of Job was "rendered into the same metre as the original Hebrew, word by word and line by line". His translation of the New Testament is based on the Greek text of Westcott and Hort. The ordering novelty in the New Testament is that it places the Gospel of John and the First Epistle of John at the beginning before the Gospel of Matthew, thus placing the Acts of the Apostles immediately after the Gospel of Luke.
Notable as well, is Ferrar Fenton's restoration of the Psalms into the musical verse form as close to the original as he could get. The Psalms were, quite literally, songs, complete with instructions for the "choirmaster" as well as descriptions of the proper musical instruments to be used. Today Psalm 48, Psalm 137, and Psalm 23 are still sung in churches, albeit to tunes not the original.
This bible is named the "Revised Fenton" because it puts things back into chronological order. In many cases, whether in error or not, Ferrar moved some parts of the scriptures down to the footnote section. These re-ordered verses have been returned to their chronological order as they are currently found in the King James Version. There was no alteration of the wording or intended meaning of what was originally intended by Mr. Fenton."
Welcome to the new blog section. Join us in this exciting effort to display the works of Ferrar Fenton! The Holy Bible in Modern English is now fully digitized and can be seen for it's creative and artistic beauty as well as for the spiritual edification that we all need through the daily study of the scriptures.
This project actually began in 2012 when the conversion of scanned images, using OCR software, revived a very beautiful but tangled digital version of Ferrar Fenton's work. The major part of the editing, including verse alignment, OCR errors and chapter breaks took over one year. Still, as we go there are minor fixes to punctuation and a few odd necessary edits.
In its very raw form, 'The Holy Bible in Modern English' went online with a free but very undependable web hosting service in 2014, where it has been ever since.
With thanks to the generosity of others, just recently, the site has been moved to its current home. This hosting service is by far superior to the previous but costs are high so we are maintaining an ad service to help offset the costs.
|RF JOH 17:1||
The Prayer of Jesus: For Himself.
|RF JOH 17:2||for You have invested Him with authority over all mankind, in order that He may give eternal life to all whom You have entrusted to Him.|
|RF JOH 17:3||And the eternal life is this: to obtain a knowledge of You the only true God, and Jesus the Messiah Whom You have sent.|
|RF JOH 17:4||I have exalted You upon the earth, by completing the work which You entrusted Me to do.|
|RF JOH 17:5||And now, Father, You have honoured Me with the honour which I had with Yourself before the world existed.|
|RF JOH 17:6|| Prayer for the Disciples.
"I have made Your power known to the men whom You entrusted to Me out of the world. They were Your own, and You entrusted them to Me; and they have carefully observed Your message.
|RF JOH 17:7||They now know that all which You have entrusted to Me proceeds from Yourself;|
|RF JOH 17:8||because the truths which You have imparted to Me, I have delivered to them. And they have accepted them, and recognized truly that I came from You; and they believed that You sent Me.|
|RF JOH 17:9||It is for them that I am praying. I am not praying for the world; but for those whom You have entrusted to Me, because they are Your own.|
|RF JOH 17:10||And all that are Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine; and I am honoured among them.|
|RF JOH 17:11||I am now no longer in the world; but they are in the world, and I am coming to You. Holy Father, preserve by Your power those whom You have entrusted to Me; so that they may be one, as We are.|
|RF JOH 17:12||While I was with them, I preserved by Your power those whom You entrusted to Me. I have guarded them, and not one of them is lost, except the son of perdition, so that the Scripture might be verified.|
|RF JOH 17:13||But I am now coming to You; and I declare these facts in the world, so that they may have My own joy perfected in themselves.|
|RF JOH 17:14||I have delivered Your message to them; and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, as also I am not of the world.|
|RF JOH 17:15||I do not pray that You should remove them from the world; but that You should preserve them from the wicked.|
|RF JOH 17:16||They do not belong to the world, as I also do not belong to the world.|
|RF JOH 17:17||Make them holy by the Truth: the message Your own is TRUTH.|
|RF JOH 17:18||As You have sent Me into the world, I have sent them into the world.|
|RF JOH 17:19||And for their sakes I made Myself holy, so that they may become holy by TRUTH.|
|RF JOH 17:20|| Prayer for the Believers.
"I do not pray, however, on behalf of these alone; but also for those who shall believe in Me by means of their teaching:
|RF JOH 17:21||so that all may be one; as You, Father, are with Me, and I with You, so that they may all be one with Us, in order that the world may believe that You sent Me.|
|RF JOH 17:22||And the honour which You have entrusted to Me, I have entrusted to them; so that they may be one, as We are One|
|RF JOH 17:23||I in them, and You in Me, so that they may be perfect in unity; that the world may recognize that You sent Me, and that I have loved them, as You loved Me.|
|RF JOH 17:24|| Prayer for the Future Gathering of all Believers.
"Father, it is My desire for these whom You have entrusted to Me, that where I am, they may be also: so that they may witness the majesty which You have given to Me; because You loved Me before the foundation of the world.
|RF JOH 17:25||O Righteous Father, the world indeed knew You not; but I knew You. And these knew that You sent|
|RF JOH 17:26||Me; and I have revealed to them Your power, and will continue to reveal it: in order that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them."|
