Work on the 'The Holy Bible in Modern English' began in 1853 by a London businessman named Ferrar Fenton (1832–1920). The complete Bible was first published in 1903, though some individual bible 'books' were published as separate volumes during the preceding 11 years.
Fenton is well known for a rearranging of the books of the Bible into what the author believed was the correct chronological order. In the Old Testament, this order follows that of the Hebrew Bible. The name of God was translated throughout the Old Testament as "The Ever-Living".
Fenton is an exciting translation that shows respect and gives clarity in many areas where other translations fall short. This Bible is described as being "translated into English direct from the original Hebrew, Chaldee, and Greek languages."
Welcome to the new blog section. Join us in this exciting effort to display the works of Ferrar Fenton! The Holy Bible in Modern English is now fully digitized and can be seen for it's creative and artistic beauty as well as for the spiritual edification that we all need through the daily study of the scriptures.
This project actually began in 2012 when the conversion of scanned images, using OCR software, revived a very beautiful but tangled digital version of Ferrar Fenton's work. The major part of the editing, including verse alignment, OCR errors and chapter breaks took over one year. Still, as we go there are minor fixes to punctuation and a few odd necessary edits.
In its very raw form, 'The Holy Bible in Modern English' went online with a free but very undependable web hosting service in 2014, where it has been ever since.
With thanks to the generosity of others, just recently, the site has been moved to its current home. This hosting service is by far superior to the previous but costs are high so we are maintaining an ad service to help offset the costs.
RF MAT 1:1 | The Genealogy of Jesus. |
RF MAT 1:2 | Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judah and his brothers; |
RF MAT 1:3 | and Judah begat Phares and Zarah by Thamar; and Phares begat Hesrom; and Hesrom begat Aram; |
RF MAT 1:4 | and Aram begat Aminadab; and Aminadab begat Naasson; and Naasson begat Salmon; |
RF MAT 1:5 | and Salmon begat Boez by Rahab; and Boez begat Obed by Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse; |
RF MAT 1:6 | and Jesse begat David the king. David the king begat Solomon by the widow of Uriah; |
RF MAT 1:7 | and Solomon begat Rehoboam; and Rehoboam begat Abia; and Abia begat Asaph; |
RF MAT 1:8 | and Asaph begat Josaphat; and Josaphat begat Joram; and Joram begat Oziah; |
RF MAT 1:9 | and Oziah begat Jotham; and Jotham begat Achaz; and Achaz begat Hezekiah; |
RF MAT 1:10 | and Hezekiah begat Manasseh; and Manasseh begat Amos; and Amos begat Josiah; |
RF MAT 1:11 | and Josiah begat Jechoniah and his brothers, about the time of the transportation into Babylon. |
RF MAT 1:12 | And after the transportation into Babylon, Jechoniah begat Salathiel; and Salathiel begat Zorobabel; |
RF MAT 1:13 | and Zorobabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor; |
RF MAT 1:14 | and Azor begat Sadok; and Sadok begat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud; |
RF MAT 1:15 | and Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Mathan; and Mathan begat Jacob; |
RF MAT 1:16 | and Jacob begat Joseph, the husband of Mary; from her was born Jesus, the Appointed MESSIAH. |
RF MAT 1:17 | Thus all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations; and from David to the transportation into Babylon were fourteen generations; and from the transportation into Babylon to the Messiah were fourteen generations. |
RF MAT 1:18 | However, the origin of Jesus the of the Messiah was thus: Mary, His mother, was promised in marriage to Joseph; but before their union, she was found to have conceived from the Holy Spirit. |
RF MAT 1:19 | Her husband Joseph, however, was a righteous man; and not wishing to degrade her, felt inclined to divorce her privately. |
RF MAT 1:20 | But while reflecting about it, he saw a messenger from the Lord appear to him during a vision, saying: "Joseph, son of David, you need not be afraid to accept your wife Mary; for what is conceived in her was produced by the Holy Spirit. |
RF MAT 1:21 | And she will give birth to a Son, and you shall name Him JESUS; for He will save His people from their sins." |
RF MAT 1:22 | Now all this took place so that the statement of the Lord, as recorded by His prophet, might be fulfilled: |
RF MAT 1:23 | BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL CONCEIVE, AND GIVE BIRTH TO A SON; AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME EMMANUEL.1 which, when translated, means, THE GOD AMONG US. ————— 1. Isa 7.14 |
RF MAT 1:24 | Then Joseph, having awakened from his sleep, did as the messenger of the Lord commanded him, and accepted his wife; |
RF MAT 1:25 | but kept apart from her until she had given birth to her Son: and he named Him JESUS. |
